When a colleague send me a shared OneNote, I can open it just fine.

Then after a few minutes I get a message - for added security we need to further verify your account, please log in.

I try -and get this message -login.microsoftonline.com is blocked

login.microsoftonline.com refused to connect.

ERR_BLOCKED_BY_RESPONSE

This has not happened before; and nothing changed about how we are doing things.

thanks!

    Hi @marissa zepeda

Good day. Thank you for reaching out, and I appreciate you sharing the details of your situation.

Before we proceed, please note that this is a user-to-user community forum. As a moderator, I don’t have access to your Microsoft 365 tenant, your account, or your device to make changes directly. However, I’ll do my best to support you by sharing the appropriate resources and directing you to the right support channels.

Based on the behavior you described, this suggests that the issue is not with the OneNote content itself, but rather with the authentication process that occurs when Microsoft needs to verify your account again.

Here are some steps you can try:

1/ Open the shared notebook in a private browsing session or in Microsoft Edge

    • Please try opening the shared OneNote link in an InPrivate/Incognito window, or in Microsoft Edge if you are currently using another browser.
    • User's image
    • This helps rule out issues caused by cached session data, browser profile settings, or saved sign-in tokens.

2/ Clear your browser cache and cookies, and review your browser privacy settings
Old or corrupted browser data can interfere with Microsoft 365 sign-in flows. In addition, if third-party cookies or strict tracking protection are enabled, the sign-in process may be blocked when Microsoft attempts to verify your account.

    • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies completely, close and reopen the browser
    • User's image
    • Then review your browser’s privacy settings and temporarily allow cookies for Microsoft-related sign-in pages before testing the shared OneNote again.
    • User's image

4/ Disable browser extensions or security add-ins temporarily
Ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and some web security add-ins can prevent the Microsoft sign-in page from loading correctly.

    • Temporarily disable any such extensions, restart the browser, and try accessing the notebook once more.
    • User's image

    5/ Contact your IT department

If possible, try opening the notebook using a different internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If the issue does not occur there, this may indicate that the current network is blocking Microsoft authentication services. In that case, your IT team may need to review proxy, firewall, SSL inspection, or web filtering settings to ensure Microsoft sign-in endpoints are allowed.

    For IT admin references:

Additionally, if needed, your IT team can also raise a support ticket with Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for deeper investigation. They have access to backend configurations and can perform a more in-depth investigation. At the very least, they can provide the most effective workaround to ensure your experience remains smooth and secure.

In case you do not know who is your IT admin, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

The behavior indicates that OneNote is trying to re‑authenticate the Microsoft 365 account, but the sign‑in endpoint login.microsoftonline.com is being blocked by something in the environment (typically a browser extension, security product, proxy, or network/content filter). Once that endpoint is blocked, OneNote cannot complete the “further verify your account” step and access to the shared notebook fails.

Because OneNote relies on successful account authentication and sync, the block on login.microsoftonline.com effectively prevents the notebook from staying connected to the service.

To restore access to the shared OneNote:

    1. Ensure that login.microsoftonline.com is allowed on the network and any security devices (firewall, proxy, web filter). This must be done by the network or security administrator if managed by an organization.
    2. Check for browser or security extensions that might be blocking Microsoft sign‑in pages and temporarily disable them, then retry the sign‑in prompt from OneNote.
    3. After the endpoint is reachable again, let OneNote prompt for sign‑in, complete the sign‑in with the correct work or school account, and allow it to sync the notebook.

If the account was recently changed or reconfigured, also verify that the correct account is used and that it has permission to the shared notebook. If authentication errors persist after the endpoint is unblocked, follow the account‑authentication troubleshooting steps for OneNote (refresh the session from the sync error, confirm correct account, and, if needed, sign out and back in so OneNote can re‑establish the session).
