Microsoft Edge cannot open

Question

My computer is unable to open Microsoft Edge. Running it as administrator does not work, and modifying it via the Apps settings in Windows also fails. The error code  0x80070002  is displayed. I hope to get this issue resolved.

Follow these steps in order to try to fix Edge not opening and the 0x80070002 installation failure:

1. Restart the PC
   • A running process can block Edge. Restart Windows and try to open Edge again.
2. Check for malware and security software
   • Run a full malware scan using Windows Security (see the "Run a scan manually" section in Stay protected with Windows Security).
   • If third‑party antivirus is installed (for example Norton or McAfee), open it and make sure it is updated. Temporarily disable it and test Edge installation/opening again.
3. Repair Microsoft Edge from Apps settings
   • Close Edge for all users.
   • Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
   • Select Microsoft Edge > Modify.
   • Approve the UAC prompt, ensure the device is online, then choose Repair and let it complete.
4. Clear any corrupted Edge data (if Edge can open at least once)
   • Open Edge.
   • Select Settings and more > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data.
   • Set Time range to All time, select Browsing history and Cached images and files, then Clear now.
5. Reinstall Microsoft Edge using the official installer
   • Open another working browser (such as Chrome).
   • Go to https://www.microsoft.com/edge and download the latest Edge installer.
   • Run the installer to reinstall Edge on top of the existing installation.
   • If installation still fails, ensure there is enough free disk space and that the installer is being run as an administrator.
6. If problems persist
   • Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for the Edge installer:
     • Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
     • Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and follow the steps, then try the Edge installer again.
