2026-06-01T19:32:50.14+00:00

I installed this update but while restarting it gave me a blue screen. Now when I try, it gives me this error: 0x80070020. Mind you I have reset my pc trying to fix this problem since it won't let me download minecraft either.

    Hi Matteo Francis Marrani Romanelli,

I understand you’re encountering error 0x80070020 while updating to Windows 10 22H2, and that the process even resulted in a blue screen.

Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, could you confirm:

    • Do you remember the blue screen stop code (for example: DRIVER_IRQL, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION)?
    • Are you using any third-party antivirus (even after reset)?

    1, Repair system files

    1. Press “Start” > type “cmd” > right‑click “Command Prompt” > “Run as administrator”
    2. Run these commands one by one:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow

2, Perform a Clean Boot (to remove hidden conflicts)

This is more effective than just “closing apps.”

    1. Press “Win + R” > type “msconfig”
    2. Go to “Services” > check “Hide all Microsoft services” > click “Disable all”
    3. Go to “Startup” > “Open Task Manager” > disable all startup items
    4. Restart your PC > try the update again

3, Upgrade using Windows 10 Installation Assistant

Instead of relying on Windows Update:

    Download from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

    1. Click “Update now”
    2. Run the tool and follow the steps

This method avoids most 0x80070020 issues because it doesn’t rely on the local update cache.

4, Check for driver-related BSOD trigger

Since you mentioned a blue screen:

    • Press “Win + X” > “Device Manager”
    • Look for any device with a warning icon
    • If found > right-click > “Update driver”

Error 0x80070020 indicates that the update process cannot access a file because it is being used by another process. This can also cause blue screens during or after the update.

To address 0x80070020 when updating to 22H2, follow these steps:

    1. Restart the device
    • Restart the PC to clear any processes that might be locking update files.
    • After restart, try running Windows Update again.
    1. Close background apps and temporarily disable antivirus
    • Close all open applications, especially download managers, backup tools, or disk utilities.
    • If a third‑party antivirus is installed, temporarily disable it while running Windows Update, then re‑enable it afterward.
    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
    • Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    • Locate Windows Update and select Run.
    • Follow the on‑screen instructions and apply any fixes it suggests.
    • Try the 22H2 update again.
    1. Check Windows Update services
    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Find Windows Update and ensure it is Running.
    • If it is stopped, start it, then retry the update.
    1. Reset Windows Update components and cache
    • Stop the Windows Update service from services.msc.
    • Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete the contents of this folder (this clears the update cache; it does not remove personal files).
    • Start the Windows Update service again.
    • Run Windows Update and attempt the 22H2 update.
    1. If blue screens continue
    • If the device still hits a blue screen during update, note the stop code shown on the blue screen and check for driver or hardware issues, as unexpected restarts and stop codes can be caused by faulty drivers or hardware.
    • If the system becomes unstable after an update attempt, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run Startup Repair or System Restore to a point before the failed update.

Once the update issue is resolved and Windows is stable, retry installing Minecraft from Microsoft Store or the official installer.
