    Hi, James Wilbur

There isn’t really a one-for-one replacement for Publisher, so the best choice depends on what you used it for. If you want something closest to Publisher for proper page layout, it is recommended that you look at Affinity Publisher. It is a desktop app, works on Windows and Mac, and is generally a good fit for newsletters, brochures, flyers, booklets, and other print-style layouts. It is also less “professional publishing house” than Adobe InDesign, so it may feel less intimidating.

If you want something simple and template-based, Canva is probably the easiest option. It is recommended that less technical users try it first because it is browser-based, has lots of templates, and is easier to learn than traditional desktop publishing software. The downside is that it is not the same as Publisher, and some features may need a paid plan.

For a free offline option, Scribus is worth knowing about, but I would not call it the easiest replacement. It is capable, especially for print layouts, but the learning curve can be steeper.

One important point: do not assume any of these will open old .pub files cleanly. Before Publisher support ends, it is best to save important Publisher files as PDF, and keep the original .pub files as backups.

For most common Publisher scenarios, the recommended substitutes within Microsoft 365 are:

    • Word – for newsletters, letterhead, envelopes, labels, business invoices, applications and forms, programs, folded paper projects, calendars, cards, brochures, ads, flyers, and business cards.
    • PowerPoint – for ads, flyers, brochures, banners, signs, posters, certificates, calendars, and cards.

These apps provide templates and layout tools that cover the majority of tasks typically done in Publisher. Templates for many of these scenarios are available at Microsoft Create.

If continued access to Publisher itself is required beyond October 2026, a perpetual (non‑Microsoft 365) version such as Office Professional 2021 can still be installed and used, although it will no longer receive support after that date.
