Hi, charith molligoda
Upgrading to Microsoft 365 Family does not always mean the earlier Microsoft 365 Basic payment is automatically refunded. Refund eligibility is checked when the unwanted subscription is cancelled, and not every cancellation results in a refund.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
First, sign in at Microsoft Services & subscriptions using the same Microsoft account used to buy the Basic plan. Find Microsoft 365 Basic, select Manage, then choose Cancel subscription or Upgrade or Cancel if that is what appears. Microsoft’s refund check happens during this cancellation flow, so if a refund is available, it should be shown there before you confirm.
Be careful not to cancel the Microsoft 365 Family subscription by mistake. You only want to cancel the Basic subscription linked to the first Order Number. Keep the Family order active if that is the plan you want to use.
If the Basic subscription no longer shows, or there is no refund option, contact Microsoft support from the same signed-in account and give both order numbers, the purchase date, and the amount charged. Explain that Basic was bought and then upgraded to Family on the same day, and you are requesting refund review for the unused Basic order. If the subscription was bought through Apple, Google Play, or another seller, the refund must be requested through that seller instead.
Please be advised that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, are not allowed to directly interfere with Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. Our role is limited solely to providing technical guidance on reported incidents, requests, or ideas.
It is recommended that you do this as soon as possible, because refund eligibility depends on timing, region, subscription type, and the purchase channel.
Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
