I deleted files from my HP Laptop desktop and need to recover them. They are not in my recycle bin either.

    Hi Michael Fabrizio,

I understand how stressful it can be when files disappear from the Desktop, especially when they are not showing in the Recycle Bin. There may still be a few recovery options worth checking, depending on how the files were deleted and whether any backup feature was enabled before that happened.

To better understand the situation, could you please confirm:

    • Which Windows version is your HP laptop running?
    • Do you remember if the files were deleted normally, or by using Shift + Delete?
    • Were the files saved directly on the Desktop, or inside a folder on the Desktop?
    • Do you use any backup service, external drive backup, File History, or OneDrive Desktop backup?
    • Do you remember the file names or file types, such as Word documents, PDFs, photos, or videos?

In the meantime, I recommend avoiding saving, downloading, or installing anything new on the laptop if the files are very important. This helps reduce the chance of the deleted data being overwritten.

    You can try these steps:

    • Search the laptop first: Open File Explorer and use the search box to look for the file name, or search by file type such as .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .png, or .xlsx.
    • Check the Desktop folder directly: Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Users\YourUserName\Desktop Please also check whether there is another user profile folder under C:\Users, in case the files were stored under a different Windows profile.
    • Try Previous Versions: Right-click the Desktop folder, select Properties, then open the Previous Versions tab. If Windows shows an earlier version from before the files were deleted, open it first to check whether the missing files are there before restoring anything.
    • Check File History if it was previously enabled Open Control Panel > File History > Restore personal files. If File History was turned on before the deletion, you may be able to browse older copies of your Desktop files and restore them.
    • Check any external or cloud backups If you ever used an external hard drive, HP backup software, OneDrive or another backup tool, check those locations as well. The files may still exist in a previous backup or online version history.

If none of these options show the files, recovery may become more difficult and is not guaranteed. In that case, you can try Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Store. Please recover the files to a different drive, not the same drive where they were deleted, and avoid saving new data to that original drive as much as possible. This can help reduce the chance of the deleted file data being overwritten.

I hope one of these methods helps you locate or restore the missing files. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Deleted files can often be recovered depending on how they were removed and where they were stored.

    1. Check OneDrive and its recycle bin
    • If Desktop was synced with OneDrive, deleted desktop files may be in OneDrive instead of the local Recycle Bin.
    • Sign in to OneDrive in a browser and look for the files.
    • Also open the OneDrive Recycle Bin and check there. If found, select the files and choose Restore so they return to their original locations.
    1. Check Windows Recycle Bin visibility
    • Ensure the Recycle Bin icon is visible:
      • Open Settings > Personalization > Themes.
      • Select Desktop icon settings.
      • Make sure Recycle Bin is checked, then select OK.
    • Open Recycle Bin and search again for the deleted files.
    1. If files bypassed the Recycle Bin Files can skip the Recycle Bin and be permanently deleted in these cases:
    • Deleted from a synced OneDrive folder in a way that removes them directly from the local drive.
    • Deleted using Shift+Delete or command-line tools.
    • Deleted from certain locations (for example, some network or synced folders) where items do not go to the Windows Recycle Bin.

If the files are not in either the Windows Recycle Bin or OneDrive/SharePoint recycle bins, they are considered permanently deleted at the OS level.

    1. Try Windows File Recovery (local drives only) If the files were on a local drive (like C:) and not recoverable from any recycle bin:
    • Use Windows File Recovery, a command-line app from Microsoft, to attempt recovery from the local storage device.
    • Recovery on cloud storage and network file shares is not supported.
    • To maximize chances of success, avoid using the PC as much as possible so new data does not overwrite the deleted file space.

If none of these methods locate the files, there is no native Windows or OneDrive method in the provided information to restore them.
