Hi Michael Fabrizio,
I understand how stressful it can be when files disappear from the Desktop, especially when they are not showing in the Recycle Bin. There may still be a few recovery options worth checking, depending on how the files were deleted and whether any backup feature was enabled before that happened.
To better understand the situation, could you please confirm:
- Which Windows version is your HP laptop running?
- Do you remember if the files were deleted normally, or by using Shift + Delete?
- Were the files saved directly on the Desktop, or inside a folder on the Desktop?
- Do you use any backup service, external drive backup, File History, or OneDrive Desktop backup?
- Do you remember the file names or file types, such as Word documents, PDFs, photos, or videos?
In the meantime, I recommend avoiding saving, downloading, or installing anything new on the laptop if the files are very important. This helps reduce the chance of the deleted data being overwritten.
You can try these steps:
- Search the laptop first: Open File Explorer and use the search box to look for the file name, or search by file type such as
.docx,.pdf,.jpg,.png, or.xlsx. - Check the Desktop folder directly: Open File Explorer and go to:
C:\Users\YourUserName\DesktopPlease also check whether there is another user profile folder underC:\Users, in case the files were stored under a different Windows profile. - Try Previous Versions: Right-click the Desktop folder, select Properties, then open the Previous Versions tab. If Windows shows an earlier version from before the files were deleted, open it first to check whether the missing files are there before restoring anything.
- Check File History if it was previously enabled Open Control Panel > File History > Restore personal files. If File History was turned on before the deletion, you may be able to browse older copies of your Desktop files and restore them.
- Check any external or cloud backups If you ever used an external hard drive, HP backup software, OneDrive or another backup tool, check those locations as well. The files may still exist in a previous backup or online version history.
If none of these options show the files, recovery may become more difficult and is not guaranteed. In that case, you can try Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Store. Please recover the files to a different drive, not the same drive where they were deleted, and avoid saving new data to that original drive as much as possible. This can help reduce the chance of the deleted file data being overwritten.
I hope one of these methods helps you locate or restore the missing files. Thank you so much for your understanding.
