I have an issue regarding my Authenticator App. It says my phone is rooted and it denies my laptop to login with my school email. So i really need help, and i have already switched off the developer option in my phone hoping that it would work.

See Jailbreak/root detection in Microsoft Authenticator

Excerpt: "Starting February 2026, we will introduce jailbreak/root detection for work or school accounts in Microsoft Authenticator ... preventing work or school accounts in Authenticator from functioning on jailbroken or rooted devices."

    Hi Mabobo Mokhina

Please note that this is a public peer-to-peer community forum. We are not Microsoft Support, and as forum moderators, our role is limited to providing general guidance and directing users to official resources. Additionally, we do not have access to your school account or your organization's systems to investigate or modify account-related settings.

Based on your description, I understand that you are receiving a message indicating that your phone may be rooted, which is preventing you from accessing your school account.

May I know whether you have already tried the following steps?

    • Power off your phone and turn it back on.
    • Clear the cache for the Microsoft Authenticator app and check whether the issue persists.
    • Check your device settings for Device Admin Apps (or Device Administrators) and verify whether any unexpected third-party applications have been granted administrator privileges.

If the issue continues after trying the above steps, I recommend contacting your school's IT administrator. Since this is a school account, your school's IT administrator is in the best position to verify the account requirements and provide further assistance.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Microsoft Authenticator now detects jailbroken or rooted devices for work or school accounts and blocks them to protect organizational security.

Turning off Developer Options does not remove root or jailbreak status. If Authenticator reports that the device is rooted, work or school accounts in the app will be blocked and may eventually be wiped from the device. Personal accounts are not affected.

To use the school account with Microsoft Authenticator again, use one of these approaches:

    1. Use a non‑rooted / non‑jailbroken device
      • Install Microsoft Authenticator on a device that is not rooted or jailbroken.
      • Add the school account again following your school’s instructions.
    2. Remove root / return device to stock (if applicable)
      • If the device has been rooted or modified, return it to the official stock firmware and remove root.
      • Once the device is fully unrooted and back to a supported state, reinstall and reconfigure Microsoft Authenticator, then re‑add the school account.

If the device is not actually rooted but Authenticator still shows this message, contact the school’s IT helpdesk. They can help verify the account and provide guidance or alternative sign‑in methods while using a compliant device.

Also ensure the phone is not running malware such as a rootkit, as this can trigger security checks and block Authenticator.
