Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Hello @Marie-Laurence Frenette,
With the New Outlook for Windows, dragging and dropping emails to File Explorer will save them as.eml files instead of.msg files. At the moment, the new Outlook version does not support exporting emails as .msg via drag-and-drop.
If you need the email in .msg format, you can try one of the following options:
Option 1: Switch to Classic Outlook (to get .msg via drag‑and‑drop)
The classic desktop version still supports dragging emails to save them as .msg files. You can try these options to switch back to Classic Outlook:
- Open Outlook and look at the top right corner > Turn off the toggle labeled “New Outlook” > Follow the prompt to open Classic Outlook
- If you cannot see the toggle button, navigate to Help > choose Go to classic Outlook
- Also, try open Classic Outlook manually by search and select Outlook (classic) in Windows search bar.
For your information, Classic Outlook will continue to be supported until at least 2029: New Outlook for Windows: A Guide to Product Availability | Microsoft Community Hub.
Option 2: Use “Save As” in New Outlook
- Open the email
- Click on the three dots button > Save As
- Choose Save as MSG
