I am looking to add a team member to my plan on planner but it is only allowing me to add a group. Is it possible to have a 1:1 plan with just one person?

    Hi @MONTGIRAUD, FELICIA (she/her/hers),

    Thank you for your question.

In Planner within Teams, there is an important distinction between personal plans and shared (group) plans.

A personal plan is designed for individual use only and isn’t intended for collaboration. That’s why you won’t see an option to directly add a single user to it.

When you want to collaborate with someone else, Planner uses a Microsoft 365 group as the underlying structure. This means sharing a plan, even with just one person, requires a group, as Planner does not support direct 1:1 sharing without it.

For reference: Manage your Personal Tasks with Planner in Teams | Microsoft Support

If your goal is to have a “1:1 plan” with just one teammate, you can still achieve this by creating a small group:

    1. Create your plan in Planner within Teams
    2. Select Share
    3. Choose Create group
    4. Add only the one colleague you want to collaborate with

This way, the plan will effectively function as a 1:1 shared workspace, even though it is technically group-based.

Yes, a 1:1 plan is possible, but how to do it depends on the type of plan being created.

    There are two main options:

    1. Create a personal plan and then share it with one person
      • In the Planner app (for example in Teams), select New plan in the left navigation.
      • When prompted for a Microsoft 365 group, leave the group selection blank to create a personal plan.
      • After the plan is created, select Share in the top-right.
      • Choose Create group or Add to existing group, but add only the single person who should have access.
      • Now tasks in this plan can be assigned to that one member using Assign on each task.
    2. Create a group-based plan that only has two members
      • Select New plan and create a new plan (or add it to a new Microsoft 365 Group).
      • Use Members to add just one other person to the plan.
      • Assign tasks using Assign on each task; only the two members (the owner and the added person) will see and work on the plan.

Planner itself does not create a plan that is literally “user-to-user” without any group behind it; either a personal plan is created and then shared, or a Microsoft 365 Group–backed plan is created with only the intended participants.
