Question

I have forgotten my password for my Microsoft money file. Is there anyway? I can change that or reset that password or find what my password was.

I know this isn’t the news you were hoping for, but I wanted to make sure you got the most accurate information about your situation.

Microsoft Money has been discontinued for many years and is no longer an officially supported Microsoft product. Because of that, there is no current Microsoft-supported tool or process to recover, reset, or bypass the password for a locked Microsoft Money file.

If the file is already open, you may be able to change or remove the password from within Money’s Password Manager. However, if the file cannot be opened because the password has been forgotten, Microsoft does not provide a way to retrieve or reset that file password.

At this point, the best practical option would be to check whether you have an older backup copy of the Money file that you can still open, or any saved record of the password. I understand this may be frustrating, especially if the file contains important financial information, but I wanted to be transparent so you do not spend time trying unsupported recovery steps.

Microsoft Money data file passwords cannot be recovered, reset, or bypassed if forgotten. There is no supported Microsoft tool or process to look up or remove the password from an existing Money file.

If the password used for the Money file is the same as a Microsoft account password and that account password is forgotten, the only supported option is to reset the Microsoft account password and then try that new password if it matches what was originally set in Money. To reset a forgotten Microsoft account password:

1. Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and select Forgotten your password?
2. Follow the steps in Reset a forgotten Microsoft account password, including verification via email or phone.

If the Money file password itself is unknown and not tied to a recoverable Microsoft account password, the file contents cannot be accessed.
