Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider retiring - How do I purchase directly now without losing all my emails?

I received an email stating that my Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) from whom I purchased my Microsoft subscription originally will soon no longer be part of the CSP network, and therefore will no longer manage my subscription on my behalf. I was told that I can either choose a new authorized CSP partner or purchase directly from Microsoft. I have 7 years of emails and onedrive docs under the tenant ID established when I purchased from the CSP. I would like to purchase directly from Microsoft going forward, asap. how can I purchase a new license directly with Microsoft and keep my tenant id without losing all my emails and documents? I have 50 days to do so. Thanks for our assistance.

    Dear @Nicole Meter,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, your CSP partner is retiring and you want to purchase Microsoft 365 directly while keeping your existing tenant and all emails/OneDrive data.

You can switch to purchasing directly from Microsoft without losing your emails or documents, as long as you remain within the same tenant.

here some suggestion you can try:

Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center https://admin.microsoft.com/#/homepage using a Global Admin account.

Purchase new licenses directly (e.g., Buy Online with credit card) under the same tenant.

    • On the left sidebar, go to the Billing > Your products page.
    • Select the subscription that you want to change.
    • On the subscription details page, select Buy licenses.

Assign the new licenses to all users before the CSP subscription expires.

After confirming services work normally, cancel or let the CSP subscription expire.

For more detailed information: Buy or remove licenses for a Microsoft business subscription

Please understand that There is no direct conversion from CSP to Microsoft direct billing, so you must purchase a new subscription and reassign licenses. Avoid any gap in licensing to prevent service interruption.

I hope my information above meet your expectations, please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

To keep the existing tenant, mailboxes, and OneDrive data while moving away from a retiring CSP, the key is to keep the same Microsoft 365 tenant active and only change how licenses are purchased and managed.

From the provided information, there are two supported patterns relevant to this scenario:

    1. Move from CSP to buying directly from Microsoft while keeping the same tenant
      • A Microsoft 365 tenant can have subscriptions from multiple channels at the same time (CSP and direct from Microsoft).
      • Existing subscriptions and data in the tenant remain unchanged when a new purchase channel is added.
      • Direct subscriptions purchased from Microsoft coexist with CSP subscriptions; the tenant, mailboxes, and OneDrive accounts are not recreated or moved.
      In practice, this means:
      • Keep using the same tenant (same tenant ID and user accounts).
      • Purchase equivalent Microsoft 365 subscriptions directly from Microsoft for that same tenant.
      • Once the new direct subscriptions are active and licenses are assigned to all users, the CSP subscriptions can be allowed to lapse or be removed without data loss, because the tenant and user objects never change.
    2. Manual transition of license-based services to a new channel while preserving data
The documented “manual path” for moving license-based customers to CSP also applies conceptually when changing channels (for example, from CSP to direct):
      • Acquire new subscriptions in the new channel (here: direct from Microsoft) in the same tenant.
      • Choose product SKUs that match the existing ones as closely as possible (same provisioning IDs/SKUs) to minimize license reassignment work.
      • Align the start of the new subscriptions with the end of the old CSP subscriptions to avoid double billing.
      • If different SKUs are chosen, licenses may need to be reassigned, but the tenant and data remain in place.
The important point is that the tenant is not tied to the CSP; it continues to exist as long as at least one valid subscription is active in that tenant. As long as licenses are in place for the users before the CSP licenses expire, Exchange Online mailboxes and OneDrive data are preserved.

Given the 50‑day window mentioned, the safe sequence is:

    1. Ensure admin access to the existing Microsoft 365 tenant (the one with the current tenant ID and data).
    2. Purchase equivalent Microsoft 365 subscriptions directly from Microsoft for that same tenant.
    3. Assign the new direct licenses to all users currently licensed via the CSP.
    4. After confirming all users are covered by direct licenses, allow the CSP subscriptions to expire or be removed.

This preserves the tenant ID, mailboxes, and OneDrive documents while changing who bills and manages the licenses.
