    Hi Naga Babu Gannamaneni,

As the AI Answer explained, BitLocker encryption cannot be bypassed. If the recovery key cannot be obtained from the previous owner, the only supported option is to erase the drive and perform a clean installation of Windows. This will permanently remove all data stored on the encrypted drive.

For a Surface device, you can reinstall Windows using a Surface Recovery USB:

    1. On another working Windows PC, download the correct Surface recovery image for your Surface model and create a USB recovery drive.
    2. Shut down the Surface completely.
    3. Insert the recovery USB into the Surface.
    4. Press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and release the Power button.
    5. When the Surface logo appears, release Volume Down to boot from the USB drive.
    6. Select your language and keyboard layout.
    7. Choose Troubleshoot and start the recovery or Windows installation process.
    8. If you reach the Windows Setup screen, select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
    9. Delete all existing partitions on the internal drive until the drive shows as Unallocated Space.
    10. Select the unallocated space and continue with the installation.
    11. After Windows finishes installing, complete the out-of-box setup and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Please note that deleting the partitions permanently removes all existing data. Once the drive has been wiped, the previous BitLocker-protected data cannot be recovered.

Please let me know how it goes or if you need any further assistance with creating the recovery USB or reinstalling Windows. I'm happy to help.

Bypassing BitLocker encryption is not possible. BitLocker is specifically designed so that, without the recovery key, the encryption cannot be removed or circumvented by anyone, including Microsoft.

For a second‑hand Surface that is BitLocker‑locked and where the recovery key is not available, there are only two realistic options:

    1. Obtain the BitLocker recovery key
The only way to unlock the existing Windows installation and keep the data is to find the recovery key using the documented methods (for example, via the original owner’s Microsoft account, organization, or printed/USB backup). See the guidance in Find your BitLocker recovery key.
    2. Erase the drive and reinstall Windows
If the recovery key truly cannot be obtained, the only way to use the device again is to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows, which permanently deletes all existing data on the encrypted drive. This is not a bypass of BitLocker; it is a full wipe and fresh install. For Surface devices, this is done by using a Surface recovery image on a USB drive and reinstalling Windows, as described in the moderator guidance:
      • If the BitLocker prompt appears before the Windows sign‑in screen and no key can be found, “unfortunately, the only option is the recovery image (and data loss).”
      • The recovery image process restores the device to factory state so that Windows can be set up again, but all previous encrypted data remains inaccessible.

There is no supported or legal method to “bypass” BitLocker to access data without the recovery key. The only supported path without the key is to wipe the device and reinstall Windows, accepting total data loss.
