Follow these steps in order, focusing on what has not already been tried (Windows Update and basic troubleshooter are already done):

    1. Test if the issue is app-specific
      1. Select Start > Camera and check if the preview works.
      2. If the camera works in the Camera app but not in other apps (Teams, Zoom, browser, etc.), adjust that app’s camera settings or permissions.
    2. Check camera privacy settings
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera.
      2. Under Allow access to the camera on this device, select Change and turn Camera access for this device On.
      3. Make sure Allow apps to access your camera is On.
      4. Under Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera, turn On for the apps that need it.
      5. Scroll down to Allow desktop apps to access your camera and ensure this is On (needed for browsers, Teams, etc.).
    3. Update the camera driver in Device Manager
      1. Select Start > Device Manager.
      2. Expand Cameras and locate the camera device.
      3. Right-click the camera > Update driver.
      4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
      5. After it completes, restart the PC and test again with the Camera app.
    4. If the camera stopped after a recent update: roll back the driver
      1. In Device Manager, right-click the camera > Properties.
      2. Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver (if available), then choose Yes.
      3. Restart the device and test the Camera app.
    5. If roll back is not available or doesn’t help: reinstall the driver
      1. In Device Manager, right-click the camera > Properties.
      2. Go to the Driver tab and select Uninstall Device.
      3. Check Delete the driver software for this device (or Attempt to remove the driver for this device) if shown, then select OK.
      4. In Device Manager, open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes.
      5. Wait for Windows to reinstall the camera driver, restart the PC, and test the Camera app.
    6. Check antivirus or security software
      1. Open the antivirus/firewall app.
      2. Look for camera/webcam protection or app control features and temporarily disable them.
      3. Test the camera again. Re-enable protection afterward.
    7. If still not working
      • If this is an external camera, test it on another PC to rule out hardware failure.
      • If it fails on multiple PCs, the camera hardware may be faulty.
      • If it only fails on this PC after all steps above, check the PC or camera manufacturer’s support page for a specific camera driver or firmware.
