Windows Command Prompt

I very much enjoy the extension of the Windows Command Prompt to re-open the different windows that I had in my previous session; however, it would be good if they re-opened in the directory that they were in instead of the default user home directory. Let me know if there is already a setting for this, or if it can be added to the development pipeline?

    Hi Shane Green,

Thank you for sharing your suggestion. It’s great to hear that you’re finding the Windows Terminal session restore feature useful.

Based on the current behavior, Windows Terminal can be configured to reopen previous sessions as suggested by the Volunteer Moderator, but there does not appear to be a setting that restores each Command Prompt tab to the exact working directory it was using before the terminal was closed. The existing "Open previous sessions" option focuses on reopening the previous session rather than preserving the last directory for each tab.

Since this appears to be a feature enhancement request rather than a configuration issue, the best way to help bring it to the product team's attention is through Feedback Hub:

    • Press Win + F to open Feedback Hub.
    • Select Suggest a feature.

Please note that I can provide suggestions and share any potential workarounds that might help while the issue is still being reviewed. In addition, I don’t have visibility into the internal workflow of Microsoft’s backend teams, so I’m unable to provide a timeline or guarantee when a fix or improvement will be released.

I hope you understand this limitation. I’m in the same position of waiting for updates, and I’ll continue to support you with any new information.

As a possible workaround, you can configure custom Windows Terminal profiles with specific starting directories for locations you use frequently, although this would not dynamically restore the last directory used in each session.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and help improve the Windows experience.

    1. Open Windows Terminal, click the dropdown arrow (or press Ctrl+,) to open Settings.
    2. Select the Startup tab in the left menu.
    3. Under the Startup action dropdown, select Open previous sessions.
