Why the cost of the public ip address which was not attached to any machine was not displayed any cost in the cost report?

Hi,
I have a question regarding Azure Public IP pricing.

To test the pricing, I created a Public IP address but did not associate it with any virtual machine or other resource. However, I couldn't find any corresponding cost for it in the Azure Cost Management report.

This has raised a few questions:

  • Does Azure not charge for an idle (unassociated) Public IP address?
  • If there is a charge, how can I view or extract the cost specifically for the Public IP in the Cost Management reports?
  • Is there any specific configuration or retention period required for the cost to appear in the reports?

Could you please clarify how Azure handles the billing and cost reporting for unassociated Public IP addresses?

    Hello Raaja sree

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Q&A platform.

The behavior depends on the SKU and allocation type of the Public IP address. Please have a look into below provided information to your queries.

    1. Does Azure charge for an unassociated Public IP?

Yes, in many cases Azure does charge for a Public IP even when it isn't attached to a VM or other resource.

According to the Azure IP Address Pricing FAQ, static Public IP addresses are billed regardless of whether they are associated with a resource, and billing begins shortly after the IP resource is created.

    Reference: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/ip-addresses/

For older/dynamic public IP scenarios, charges may only apply while the associated resource is running. Azure pricing varies by SKU (Standard, StandardV2, Global, etc.) and allocation method.

    1. Why don't I see the cost in Cost Management?

    A few common reasons are:

    • Cost data isn't real-time. Azure Cost Management can take some time before new usage appears.
    • The Public IP may have existed for only a short period, generating a very small charge that is difficult to notice in aggregated views.
    • Cost Analysis often groups charges by meters, not just by resource names. Public IP charges may appear under IP Address Hours or similar networking meters rather than being immediately obvious as a Public IP resource. Azure billing is based on usage meters that generate billing records.
    1. How can I view the Public IP cost specifically?

    You can try:

    1. Cost Management + BillingCost Analysis.
    2. Group by Resource, Resource Type, or Meter.
    3. Filter for:
      • Resource Type = Public IP Addresses
        • Service = Networking
        1. If the charge is not visible, download the Usage + Charges CSV or Cost Details report, which contains the underlying billing meters for each resource.
    4. Is there a retention period before costs appear?

Yes. Cost and usage records are not instantaneous. It can take time for usage records to be processed and reflected in Cost Management.

    Please verify the following:

    • Public IP SKU (Standard, StandardV2, Global, etc.)
    • Allocation method (Static or Dynamic)
    • How long the Public IP existed before checking Cost Management
    • Whether you've reviewed the Usage + Charges export as well as Cost Analysis

If the IP was a Standard Static Public IP, you should generally expect a charge even when it is not associated with a resource.

    Thanks,
    Suchitra.

hi Raaja sree & thx for sharing urs issue here at Q&A portal,

Idle Public IPv4 addresses can still be charged. It doesn’t have to be attached to a VM. If u don’t see it in Cost Management, it may be because the cost is tiny, not posted yet, grouped under Networking, or the date/filter scope doesn’t include it. Cost data is not always real-time. Check Cost Management by resource, filter the meter/category for Public IP / Networking, and wait up to 24–48 hrs if it was created recently.

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/ip-addresses/

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-network/ip-services/public-ip-addresses

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cost-management-billing/costs/understand-cost-mgt-data

So don’t keep unused public IPs around. If u created it only for testing, delete it.

    rgds,

    Alex
