My domain parked me for a week when my credit card expired. I'm back up, but is there any way to retrieve the emails from that week? I've already looked through junk mail, deleted, et al

    Hi John,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the missing emails during the period when the domain was parked.

Unfortunately, if the domain was expired or parked during that time, there may not be a mailbox-side location from which the missing messages can be recovered. When a custom domain used with Exchange Online becomes inactive or expires, email sent to addresses associated with that domain may not be received by Microsoft 365.

For reference: Domain expiring soon insight in the new Exchange admin center (new EAC) in Exchange Online

To further investigate the issue, please review the following checks using an account with administrative privileges:

Run a Message Trace for the affected date range in the Exchange admin center under Mail Flow > Message Trace. This will help determine whether Microsoft 365 received, delivered, deferred, or rejected the messages.

For reference: Message trace in the new EAC in Exchange Online | Microsoft Learn

    • Message Trace data is available for up to 90 days, allowing administrators to verify whether the missing messages entered the Microsoft 365 service.
    •  If the trace shows that the messages were delivered, please review:
      • Recover Deleted Items
      • Quarantine
      • Inbox rules
      • Forwarding settings
      • Retention policies

Depending on your organization's retention configuration, deleted messages may still be recoverable.

For reference: Retention tags and retention policies in Exchange Online | Microsoft Learn

    • On the other hand, if the Message Trace shows no record of the missing messages, this would generally indicate that the emails never reached Microsoft 365 while the domain was expired or parked. In such cases, the messages typically cannot be recovered because they were never accepted into the service. The original senders may need to resend the emails and may have received a non-delivery report (NDR) or bounce-back notification when the messages were originally sent.

Additionally, it is recommended to confirm that the domain is active and that the MX records are correctly pointing to Microsoft 365 to help ensure normal mail flow moving forward.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

Thank you, and have a great day.
