Hi Rick Scott
Please confirm:
- Can you save or edit the same contact in Outlook.com People on the web?
- Is the account an Outlook.com/Hotmail account, or a Gmail/Yahoo/other account added to New Outlook?
- Does the error happen with every contact, or only contacts with phone numbers, addresses, notes, or pasted details?
Meanwhile, try the steps below.
1) Check whether the contact can be saved in Outlook.com on the web
Sign in to Outlook.com, open People, then try to create or edit the same contact there. See supported steps for creating and editing contacts are listed here: Add, find, edit, or delete a contact in Outlook | Microsoft Support and Create, view, and edit contacts and contact lists in Outlook.com | Microsoft Support
If the contact saves successfully on the web, use Outlook.com People as a temporary workaround while troubleshooting New Outlook.
2) Make sure the contact is being saved under the correct account
In New Outlook, go to People and check which account or contact list is selected before creating the contact. If you have more than one account added, create the contact under the Outlook.com or Hotmail account where you want it stored.
3) Try saving a very basic contact first
Create a new contact with only:
Then select Save. If that works, reopen the contact and add the phone number, address, notes, or other details afterward.
4) Update New Outlook and Windows
Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, then install any available update for Outlook for Windows. Also install pending Windows updates, restart the PC, and test saving the contact again.
5) Repair New Outlook
Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Outlook (new) > Advanced options > Repair. After the repair completes, reopen New Outlook and try saving the contact again.
6) Reset New Outlook if Repair does not help
Go back to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Outlook (new) > Advanced options > Reset.
This resets the local app data on the device. It should not delete contacts already stored in your Outlook.com mailbox, but you may need to add the account again after the reset.
7) Check Microsoft’s official New Outlook known issues page
Review Microsoft’s official page: Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in new Outlook for Windows | Microsoft Support
8) Use Outlook.com People or classic Outlook as a temporary workaround
If New Outlook still shows “Couldn’t save contact,” continue managing contacts from Outlook.com People on the web.
If classic Outlook is available on your device, you can also use it temporarily until the New Outlook app behavior is resolved.
9) Report it from New Outlook
In New Outlook, go to Help > Support or Help > Feedback and include:
- The exact error
- The account type, such as Outlook.com, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, or another provider
- Whether the same contact can be saved in Outlook.com People on the web
- Whether it happens with all contacts or only contacts with extra fields
Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!
