Why doesn't the audio icon highlight when I try to insert music into my powerpoint presentation

The Audio option is usually grayed out when PowerPoint is not in Normal editing view, no slide is selected, or the presentation is read-only or restricted. An outdated PowerPoint version can also cause this behavior.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

Open the View tab, choose Normal, then select a regular slide in the thumbnail pane on the left. Try Insert > Audio > Audio on My PC again.

If a yellow bar appears at the top, select Enable Editing. Also save the file locally as a new.pptx file using File > Save As.

Create a blank presentation and test Insert > Audio there. If it works, the original file may be damaged or restricted. It is recommended that you copy the slides into the new presentation and insert the music there.

Update PowerPoint. On Windows, use File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. On Mac, use Help > Check for Updates.

Also make sure the music is an actual audio file stored on the computer, rather than a streaming-service song or playlist.
