Password not working

Recently, the ‘password’ method to log I has been saying the password is incorrect, even when I reset it five seconds ago to something short and easy to remember. This happens across all devices and web browsers - and, most problematically, on my home pc that I can no longer login to, since the password is the only method available. (Hello/PIN requires password to set up.) I do not have any kind of password rotation setting applied, and even if I did that shouldn’t invalidate new passwords the moment they’re set.

Any help to get passwords working as a sign-in method again would be appreciated.

For future reference; kludged together a workaround when microsoft support couldn't help, by using the fact I have two disk drives.

Took out my SSD, installed windows with a new account on my old storage drive (RIP to all the games on there), plugged SSD back in, dragged everything in my original User folder over to the new one in a zip file, unplugged HDD, reinstalled windows on SSD and was able to set a local password, plugged HDD back in, got the files back over. It wasn't perfect, and there's almost certainly stuff I missed, but it worked.

    Hi Jack Haseldine,

I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when the newly changed password is rejected across multiple devices and you can no longer sign in to your home PC.

To narrow this down, could you please confirm:

    • Does the Windows sign-in screen show your Microsoft account email address, or only a local username?
    • Can you sign in to the same account at Microsoft account using the new password?
    • What is the exact error shown when you enter the password on the PC?

In the meantime, please try the following:

    • On the Windows sign-in screen, make sure the PC is connected to the Internet using the network icon in the lower-right corner.
    • Select Sign-in options, choose the password icon, and make sure you are entering the password rather than a PIN.
    • Check the keyboard language, Caps Lock, and Num Lock. You can also use the on-screen keyboard from the Accessibility menu to rule out a keyboard input issue.
    • If this is a Microsoft account, select I forgot my password on the sign-in screen and complete the reset there, making sure the email address shown is the same account you are resetting.
    • If the password is also rejected on the Microsoft account website, try the Microsoft account Sign-in Helper.

Please avoid repeatedly changing the password for now, as confirming which account is being used and whether the new password works online will help identify the correct next step. While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.
