win 11 won't install

trying to reinstall win 11 on my pc but it says it can't install to a usb drive

I understand how frustrating it can be when you are trying to reinstall Windows 11, but Setup reports that Windows cannot be installed to a USB drive. 

Before proceeding, could you clarify: 

• At what stage do you see the message, when selecting the installation destination or before that? 

In the meantime, you can try these workaround steps below to troubleshoot the issue:  

Option 1: Review the boot mode  

• Enter BIOS/UEFI settings 
• Confirm UEFI mode is enabled 

Option 2: Load storage drivers if needed  

• At the disk selection screen, select Load Driver 
• Install the storage controller driver provided by your device manufacturer if the internal drive is not detected 

Option 3: Clean disk configuration (if the correct internal drive is available and contains no needed data)  

• Press Shift + F10 
• Run: diskpart   list disk  
• Verify which disk is the internal drive before making any changes 

Option 4: Create fresh installation media  

• Go to Windows 11 website: Download Windows 11 
• Under Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO)  
• Once done downloading the ISO, kindly right-click on ISO then click Mount> then Click Setup.exe  
• You may be prompted by User Account Control. If so, click on Yes.  
• In the Install Windows 11 dialog, click Next.  
• Setup will check your PC and show a license agreement. Click on Accept in the license terms dialog.  
• Wait for the setup program to check for the available free space.  
• On the Ready to install page, make sure Keep personal files and apps has been checked.  
• Then click Install and just follow the prompt.  
• Windows 11 will restart your device several times and lead you to the lock screen. Depending on the options you set, it will keep all your files, apps, and user accounts.

Hi Tony,

Windows needs to be installed to an SSD

on your PC.

Why can't you install to the PC?
