I cannot install mdac refresh 2.8 on my windows 11

Nothing helped but thanks anyway. I called in an expensive expert and he couldn't fix it.

Then I fully reset the computer and even this didn't help.

I've given up on it and will do without until I get a new computer.

@Peter Spencer I remember installing MDAC years ago on the servers that I supported. But that was in the NT 4.0 to Server 2003 days. I can't recall ever needing MDAC on any recent OS. My guess is that you are getting a misleading error message. Or you are trying to install some other program that is so old, it's looking for files or registry entries that are not used anymore.

@Vikki-T asked the correct questions in the "To help narrow this down, could you please provide a few more details" reply. If you don't provide an error message, or explain why you want to install MDAC, it's really hard to help you.

Update: I did a little research and found this. Note the "shipped with" column. The install is likely failing because the software is already included with Win11. Disclaimer, I did not try to run the install.

Update 2: I managed to force install the MDAC component checker on Win11. It is documented as only supported on XP sp2 and Server 2003 sp3.

Your install is likely failing because you are trying to back level an already installed component.

I don't see any reason to install MDAC 2.8 on Win11.

Hi MotoX80, thank you for investigating this - wonderful answer to be honest. Your explanation makes sense: Windows already includes its data-access components, so forcing the legacy MDAC 2.8 installer on Windows 11 is unlikely to help.

And Hi to Peter, I’m sorry that even a full reset did not resolve this. This appears more likely to be a compatibility issue with the older program requesting MDAC 2.8, rather than a fault with the computer itself.
