When you open a file attachment on your computer, the operating system (Windows or macOS) uses the app which is currently associated with the file type. Rather than open the attachment directly, you can download it to your computer, start the program you want to use and then browse for the attachment (which should be in your downloads folder by default). Of course, you can change the default app association (the steps will depend on the OS).

    Hi, Mary McCormack

Outlook does not normally convert WordPerfect files. In many cases, Windows is simply using Word to open the attachment, which can make the file look like a Word document even though it remains a .wpd file. Outlook opens downloaded attachments with the app associated with that file type.

First, save the attachment without opening it. In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions, then check whether the filename ends in .wpd or .docx. The extension identifies the actual file type. A Word icon alone does not mean the file was converted.

If it still ends in .wpd, change the default app:

Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.

    Search for .wpd.

Select WordPerfect as the app used to open that file type.

If the extension changes only after opening and saving the file in Word, use Save As and avoid saving it as .docx. If WordPerfect is not installed, it will need to be installed before it can be selected as the default app.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
