The 0x0 error is widely reported after the July 13 update.

If you have MacOS Tahoe and a current Microsoft 365 subscription, the working method to resolve the 0x0 error is to completely uninstall the Office apps using the steps provided on this link, then download and reinstall Office.

On Mac, the 0x0 activation error with a current Microsoft 365 subscription matches a known issue reported by other users. The supported fixes in the provided material are:

    1. Completely uninstall the Office apps, then reinstall them.
      • One accepted resolution for the same Unknown error 0x0 issue on Mac is to fully remove Office for Mac and then download and reinstall the apps.
      • Another accepted resolution says the install source must match the purchase source:
        • If the subscription was purchased through the Apple App Store, reinstall from the App Store.
        • If it was purchased directly from Microsoft, sign in at office.com and install from there.
    2. Check for Office updates from within an Office app.
      • Open any Office app such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
      • Go to Help > Check for Updates.
      • Set updates to Automatically if available, then select Check for Updates.
      • If updates continue to fail, proceed with the uninstall/reinstall path above.
    3. If Excel opens files but will not save after activation problems, try a temporary workaround to protect changes:
      • File > Save As and save with a new file name.
      • If that fails, move the worksheets to a new workbook:
        1. Press Shift+F11 to add a filler worksheet.
        2. Select the first real sheet, hold Shift, and select the last sheet.
        3. Right-select the grouped sheets and choose Move or copy.
        4. In To Book, select (New Book).
        5. Select OK.
      • Also try File > Save As and save as .xlsx or .xlsm instead of older formats.
    4. If a file is locked or read-only, rule that out separately.
      • Make sure the workbook is closed on all devices.
      • Wait a few minutes for the server to release the lock.
      • If another user has it open, wait for them to close it or open it read-only.
    5. If the issue started after recent updates and reinstall does not help, contact support.
      • The Mac support article for serious disk/save errors says to install the latest Office for Mac update first, and if the problem continues, contact support.
