Restoring OneDrive Usage

I used it while using Microsoft 365 Business until early January of this year after it expired. (Expiration date 6/22/26)

Since July 20th, all files shared on OneDrive have disappeared. Never deleted.

Also, there are deleted history in the trash, and even if you click Restore, the files are not restored, only the folder is restored.

Can't restore the secondary trash and archived history?

    Dear Mason Lucy

I completely understand how concerning it is to lose access to your shared files and encounter issues when attempting to restore them.

The issue you are experiencing stems from the standard Microsoft 365 Subscription Expiration Lifecycle:

    1. Subscription Expiration: When your Microsoft 365 Business subscription expired on June 22, 2026, your tenant entered a 30-day Grace Period, followed by a Disabled Status (30–90 days).
    2. Data Retention Window (July 20 Impact): Exactly 28–30 days after expiration (around July 20, 2026), the subscription moved into the Disabled state. During this state, user access to OneDrive items is revoked, shared links break, and data retention policies begin permanently purging content from both the primary and Secondary Recycle Bin (Stage 2).

    Why Restoration Fails

Shared Files Disappeared: Once the subscription moves to a Disabled state, external and internal sharing permissions are stripped, making shared files invisible to users.

Recycle Bin Errors: Because the tenant is in a expired/disabled state, the backend service blocks restoring file objects even if the folder structure remains visible.

Secondary Recycle Bin & Archive Availability: Standard end-user recovery tools (including the Secondary Recycle Bin) cannot process restores once the account/tenant lifecycle locks file system actions.

To recover your files, action must be taken immediately before the tenant reaches the Deprovisioned State (at which point all data is permanently deleted and irrecoverable).

Step 1: Reactivate the Subscription Immediately:

    • Log into the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using an Administrator account.
    • Navigate to Billing > Your products.
    • Select your expired Microsoft 365 Business subscription and click Reactivate (or purchase a new license and assign it to your user account).

Once reactivated, file access and sharing links will automatically re-establish within 24 hours.

Step 2: If You Are Not the Global Admin:

Please contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 Global Administrator immediately to renew or reactivate the license.

Step 3: Contact Microsoft Support (Admin Action Required):

If reactivating the subscription does not automatically restore files from the Secondary Recycle Bin, your Global Admin must open an urgent service request via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center (Support > New service request).

Microsoft Data Protection Support can perform a backend point-in-time restore within a strict 14-day window of backend deletion.

For full details on data retention policies upon subscription end, please refer to the official Microsoft 365 Subscription Lifecycle Documentation.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need further guidance.
