No one here can answer the "why" question. Something is messed up in your Word.

Skip right to doing an Online repair which will take about 30 minutes.

    See: https://support.office.com/article/7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

Before doing this, make sure that your purchase of Word is associated with your Microsoft Account.

What is the exact error message?

Often, an Online Repair will work, if you have unsuccessfully tried the Repair Now option already. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application .

Before you try the Online Repair, make sure that you can access your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it. That way, you know you can reinstall Office after the repair.

    Hi! Let me help you.

It could also be caused by a corrupted add-in.

Have you tried running the online repair?

Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter.

Go to Programs → Programs and Features.

Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.

Select it, then click Change (or right-click it and select Change).

    Choose Online Repair.

    Click Repair, then confirm.

Wait for the repair to complete (this requires an internet connection).

Restart your PC, then test your Office apps again.

It usually means the Office installation has corrupted or missing files, and Word is detecting a problem that prevents it from working correctly. The built-in prompt to repair from the error dialog often does not fix the issue fully.

A more thorough fix is to run an Office repair from Windows:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Apps or Installed Apps.
    3. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
    4. Select it, then choose Modify or Change.
    5. If available, choose Online Repair. This is more thorough than Quick Repair because Quick Repair only detects and replaces corrupted files.
    6. Complete the on-screen steps, then try opening Word again.

If the installation is Office 2013 on Windows 10, this error was also addressed by a product update. In any Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If Update Now is missing, first choose Enable Updates.
