In cases when Repair Now fails, exit all Office apps and run an Online Repair (as suggested by the AI bot). See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application .

Before you begin, make sure that you can access your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services and that Office is associated with it. That way, you know you will be able to reinstall Office which is often the final step of an Online Repair.

    Hi,

What changes to your computer or subscription before this issue?

Press Win + R, type winword /safe, and press Enter to start Microsoft Word in Safe Mode. This mode loads Word with only the essential components and temporarily disables add-ins, which helps identify if one of them is causing the issue. If Word opens correctly in this mode, go to File > Options > Add-ins and turn off the add-ins one by one to find the cause.

The error usually indicates that Word’s installation or one of its components has become corrupted.

    Try the following steps:

    1. Restart Windows and try opening Word again.
    2. Start Word in Safe Mode by pressing Win + R, entering winword /safe, and pressing Enter.
      • If Word opens in Safe Mode, disable any recently installed Word add-ins under File → Options → Add-ins.
      1. If the problem continues, repair Microsoft 365:
        • Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps
          • Find Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office
            • Select Modify
              • Try Quick Repair first.
                • If that doesn't resolve the issue, run Online Repair.
                1. Restart the computer after the repair and test Word again.
                2. Also check for pending Office and Windows updates.

If Word still shows the same error after Online Repair, the next step would be to check whether the issue is caused by a specific Word template, add-in, or user profile.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Restart the PC, sign back in, and try Word again.
    2. Run an Office Online Repair.
      • On Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps
      • On Windows 10: right-click Start > Apps and Features
      • Find Microsoft 365 or Office
      • Select Modify
      • If prompted, choose Online Repair > Repair
      Notes:
      • This repairs the entire Office suite, not just Word.
      • Quick Repair is faster, but Online Repair is the option that makes sure everything gets fixed.
    3. Follow the on-screen steps and restart the PC if prompted.

If Word still fails to open after Online Repair, make sure Office is fully updated:

    • Open an Office app if possible
    • Go to File > Account
    • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now

If the built-in Repair now prompt in Word did not fix the issue, the recommended next step is still Online Repair from Windows Settings.
