    Common causes are:

    1. The file itself is marked read-only
      • In File Explorer, right-click the document > Properties.
      • If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
      • If there is an Unblock option in Properties, select it.
    2. The file opened in Protected View
      • This often happens with files downloaded from the internet, opened from email attachments, or opened from potentially unsafe locations.
      • In Word, select Enable Editing if the document is trusted.
    3. The file location is the issue
      • Create a new folder on the local drive.
      • Open Word > File > New.
      • Create or edit a document and save it in that new folder.
      • Close and reopen it.
      • If that file opens normally, the problem is likely with the original folder or storage location.
    4. The document was shared as view-only
      • If the file was shared from Word for the web with Can view permission, it can be viewed but not edited.

If this affects only one document, a practical workaround is to copy the content into a new blank Word document and save that new file to the Desktop or another local folder.

    Hi,

This behavior can occur for Mac users who are not running an updated version of macOS. To clarify, are you on a Mac or Windows computer? If Mac, what version of macOS are you running (for example, Ventura 13, Monterey 12, Sonoma 14, or Sequoia 15)?

    Go to: https://account.microsoft.com/services

Can you confirm if your license or subscription appears there and is listed as active?

If you are on Windows, in the meantime, please try the following:

Open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.), sign out of your account, and then sign back in with the correct Microsoft account to refresh the license.

If the issue persists, type “Control Panel” in the search bar, then go to Programs and Features > Microsoft 365/Office > right-click > Change. Run Quick Repair first. If the issue persists, run Online Repair.
