My Epson ET-4950 printer/scanner won't recognize my computer to initiate a scan from the printer control panel to my computer. I've worked with MS support and narrowed the problem to services called Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. However, this has provided inconsistent results.

    Welcome Dan Purkey,

Thank you for providing the details. Since you have already narrowed the issue down to the Windows discovery services and their behavior is inconsistent, I'd like to gather a little more information before suggesting additional troubleshooting.

    • Is the Epson ET-4950 connected by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB?
    • Can you successfully initiate a scan from Epson Scan 2 on the computer, and is the problem only when starting the scan from the printer's control panel?
    • Does the computer appear under "Scan to Computer" on the printer at any time, or is it never listed?
    • Does the issue return after a restart, sleep/wake cycle, or network change?

In the meantime, please try these quick checks:

1, Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.

    • Verify that the following services are set to Automatic (Delayed Start) and are currently Running:
      • Function Discovery Provider Host
      • Function Discovery Resource Publication
      • SSDP Discovery
      • UPnP Device Host

2, Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings

    • Ensure Network discovery is turned On for your current network profile.

3, Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall

    • Confirm Epson scanning software is allowed on your current network type.

4, Check whether your network is set to Private:

    • Open Settings > Network & Internet > your active connection.
    • Verify Network profile type is set to Private
