Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
Hello @Sadie
First, I would like to quickly review a few key points
- When you join or make a call in Microsoft Teams, both the microphone and camera cannot be turned on.
- The microphone and camera controls appear in light gray, and when you try to select them, a prohibition symbol is shown, preventing activation.
Second, to better understand the situation and help identify the root cause, could you please confirm the following:
- Are you using the Microsoft Teams desktop application or the web version in a browser?
- When you move your mouse pointer over the grayed out microphone or camera button, do you see any message or notification displayed?
- Does this occur in every Teams meeting and call, or only in a specific meeting or call?
- If you open the Windows "Camera" app, does the camera work normally there?
Along the way, I will also share a few simple steps you can try to double‑check what might be happening on your end.
1/ Check Windows camera and microphone permissions
If Windows does not allow Teams to access the camera or microphone, Teams may display the controls as unavailable.
- Press "Windows + I" to open "Settings".
- Select "Privacy & Security".
- Select "Camera" from the left panel.
- Make sure "Camera access" is turned On.
- Make sure "Let apps access your camera" is turned On.
Repeat the same check under "Microphone" and ensure access is enabled.

2/ Verify the devices are detected in Teams
If Teams cannot detect a microphone or camera, the controls may appear unavailable during calls.
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Select "Settings and more" (three dots) in the top-right corner.
- Select "Settings".
- Select "Devices".
- Under "Audio devices", check whether a microphone is listed.
- Under "Camera", check whether a camera is listed.
Your camera and microphone should appear in the device lists.

3/ Sign out of Teams and restart the application
Refreshing the Teams session can help reload device detection and account settings.
- Select your profile picture in Teams.
- Choose "Sign out".
- Close Teams completely.
- Reopen Teams and sign back in -> Test a call again.
If you get stuck while trying the steps above, please share a screenshot or provide more detailed information. I will check the situation and continue to support you.
Kind regards,
