    Hi, Rob Grae

This error is often caused by a sign-in or account-session problem rather than Windows Defender protection itself. It can also be a temporary service-side issue if the same error appears on multiple devices.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Confirm that Defender is signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. Sign out of any other Microsoft accounts first.

Open Microsoft Defender in an Edge InPrivate window. If it works there, clear the cookies and cached data for Microsoft sites in your regular browser, then sign in again. This resolved a similar identity-monitoring issue where Defender had silently used the wrong Microsoft account.

Test the feature from the Defender web portal or the mobile Defender app. A recent case showed the web version working while the Windows app continued displaying the same error, indicating an app-side or temporary service issue.

If only the Windows app fails, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Defender > Advanced options, then select Repair. Use Reset only if Repair does not help, as Reset removes the app’s local settings and sign-in state.

If the error also occurs on the web and mobile, submit it through Defender > Profile > Help and feedback, including a screenshot and the approximate time the error occurred. This will likely require an account-side investigation rather than further Windows troubleshooting.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Try these supported steps for Microsoft Defender for Individuals identity theft monitoring:

    1. Open the Microsoft Defender app or go to the My Defender portal at https://mydefender.microsoft.com.
    2. On the dashboard, find the Identity theft monitoring card, or Credit monitoring if identity theft monitoring was already set up before, and select Get started.
    3. Follow the profile setup steps again and accept the terms of service.
    4. If credit monitoring is part of the setup, provide the Social Security number when prompted.

If setup keeps failing with "Something went wrong - We couldn't load this info. Please try again later.", use these troubleshooting steps that are supported by the available guidance:

    1. Run Windows Update to make sure the latest fixes and components are installed.
    2. If Microsoft Defender continues to encounter errors, install the latest protection updates manually.
    3. If the issue appears related to the identity theft monitoring enrollment itself, remove the existing enrollment data and set it up again:
      • In the Defender dashboard, open Credit monitoring / Identity theft monitoring.
      • Use the ellipsis (...) menu and choose Remove all your info.
      • Start the setup again to re-establish the enrollment.
    4. If the problem occurs during address verification, enter the address exactly as it appears in standardized credit-bureau records. Address verification for this feature is tied to Experian-backed enrollment, and mismatches can block setup.

    Important limits for this feature:

    • Identity theft monitoring and credit monitoring are available in the United States and U.S. territories.
    • The device’s primary display language must be set to English.
    • For family members, organizers can’t onboard, view, or receive alerts related to family member credit monitoring.

If an alert is eventually created after setup, unrecognized activity can be reviewed in the app and the app provides recommended next steps. A restoration support phone number is also available in the app for additional help.
