Cannot enter data into Excel

I transferred contents of old Mac to new Mac. Transferred License to new Mac. It shows it is licensed to me. I can open an Excel file but it won't let me enter data. I can start a new file but can't enter data. It will let me name it and save it but no content. Word works fine-no problems.
