If this is the original computer that came with Windows XP, it is recommended that you reinstall it using the manufacturer’s original recovery CD or recovery partition. The factory image may activate automatically because it is matched to that computer’s BIOS. If you no longer have the recovery media, contact the PC manufacturer and ask whether replacement recovery discs are still available.

Also check the Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the computer. The product key must match both the installed edition, such as XP Home or XP Professional, and the license type. An OEM key normally will not work with ordinary retail installation media, and the reverse can also be true. Reinstalling with the correct matching media may resolve the activation problem. A Windows product key is normally found on the device’s COA label or original packaging. Find your Windows product key

Avoid activation cracks or registry bypasses, as these are unsafe and may contain malware. If the original media and valid key cannot activate, there may be no other supported workaround. Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014, so keeping this computer offline or replacing it with a supported system is strongly recommended.

To activate Windows XP without internet, use offline activation with an Installation ID and Confirmation ID.

1. Open Start.
2. Select All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows.
3. Select Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows now.
4. Select the Country or Region, then select Next.
5. Note the Installation ID shown on the screen.
6. On another device with internet access, go to the Product Activation Portal: https://aka.ms/WindowsActivate
7. Pass the Captcha challenge, sign in, then select Activate a Microsoft Product > Windows > Windows XP.
8. Enter the Installation ID and select Submit.
9. The portal returns a Confirmation ID.
10. Return to the Windows XP activation screen, enter the Confirmation ID, and select Next.

Alternative method from Command Prompt:

1. Open Start > Run.
2. Type CMD and press Enter.
3. Type OOBE/MSOOBE /a and press Enter.
4. Select the Telephone Activation option.
5. Select the Country or Region, then select Next.
6. Use the displayed Installation ID in the Product Activation Portal, then enter the returned Confirmation ID.

Support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014.
