Update payment status

I have renewed my subscription recently to Microsoft 365 and it has already been paid. However, it always tells me to update payment whenever I open the app.

When you sign in to your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services does the subscription show as active there, or still unpaid?

If active, please try these steps if you haven’t already:

• Make sure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account that the subscription is linked to.
• Then, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your license status.

If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

Here’s how:

• Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
• Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
• Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

• Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
• Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
• Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
• That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

This usually happens when the Microsoft 365 apps have not refreshed the subscription status after renewal or after a payment issue was fixed.

Try this in order:

1. Confirm the subscription is active
   • Close all Office apps.
   • Go to Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services
   • Sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the Microsoft 365 purchase.
   • Check that the Microsoft 365 subscription shows as active and that the expiry date looks correct.
2. Check the payment method status
   • Go to Payment options: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
   • If the payment method shows an error, update it.
   • If the subscription was bought from a third party such as Apple, Google, Amazon, or a retailer, billing must be managed with that provider directly.
3. If the renewal was from a retail box or card, enter the product key
   • Payment alone does not start the renewed subscription until the product key on the box/card is redeemed, or the link in the receipt email is completed.
4. Refresh the license in the Office app
   • Open Word or Excel.
   • Sign out of Office from the top-right account menu.
   • Close the app.
   • Restart the PC.
   • Open the app again and sign back in with the subscription account.
5. Make sure the apps can validate online
   • Microsoft 365 desktop apps need internet access for activation and periodic license checks.
   • If the device has not connected to the internet regularly, the apps can show reduced functionality or licensing notices.
6. If the notice still appears
   • For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal, contact Microsoft Support.
   • If this is a work or school subscription, contact the Microsoft 365 admin or IT department.

If nothing is done, Office can eventually go into reduced functionality mode, where documents can still be opened and printed, but not edited or newly created. As a temporary workaround, the free web apps are available at Office.com.
