Greetings,

I am a long-time user of Microsoft software and use it as personal account, school, and work with my community college employer. I also work as a contractor for a counseling group. Recently they have also changed the organization emails to Microsoft. so far, I have not been able to log from a computer to my new email. I have recently bought a device just to use with the counseling group but when try to log there is a message that the email does not exist. I already ask the person acting as an IT and his answer for the problem is that I need Microsoft Pro. I never heard that I need a specific software I believe is a problem with the business account. However, I just want to know from you what is your take on this.

    Hi Daniela,

Since you're using a work account and your device is running Windows Home, the device does not support a full work-account sign-in at the Windows lock screen. Work and school accounts are managed differently from personal Microsoft accounts.

To set up the device, you'll first need to sign in with a personal Microsoft account (gmail, hotmail, outlook.com...). Once you're signed in to Windows, you can connect your work account by going to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school

From there, select Connect and sign in with your organization's account to access your organization's Microsoft 365 resources.

Regarding what your IT administrator mentioned about "Microsoft Pro," they are likely referring to Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise, which are editions designed to support organizational sign-ins and management features.

If your device is running Windows Home, you cannot sign in to Windows directly with a work or school account during the initial device setup. However, on a device running Windows Pro or Enterprise, you can sign in with your organization account and fully join the device to your organization's environment.

I hope this provides enough clarity and helps you stay inform with your current situation.

This is most likely an account setup or device-join issue, not a requirement to buy “Microsoft Pro” for the email itself.

A work email used for Windows sign-in must exist as a work or school account in the organization’s Microsoft environment. A Microsoft 365 business email address is different from a personal Microsoft account, and Windows will not recognize it for device sign-in unless the account is properly set up in the organization and the device is joined correctly.

    What to check:

    1. Confirm the account type
      • A business account is created by the organization’s administrator.
      • It may look like ******@organization.com or sometimes ******@organization.onmicrosoft.com.
      • If the account works in Microsoft 365 or Azure but not in Windows, the issue is likely how the device is being connected to the organization.
    2. On the Windows device, use the work-account join path
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
      • Select Connect.
      • If an old work account is already listed there, disconnect it first, then restart.
      • On the next screen, choose Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID.
      • Then sign in with the counseling group work account.
      • Restart the device, then use Switch user to sign in with that work account.
    3. Verify the Windows edition
      • If Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID does not appear, verify the PC is really running Windows Pro.
      • The accepted guidance in the related Windows sign-in case specifically says to check this with winver.
    4. If the email is still reported as not found
      • The organization should verify that the user is properly registered in its Microsoft tenant as a work account.
      • Business email addresses must be recognized as organizational accounts before they can be used for device access.

Also, if the same email address exists as both a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account, Microsoft may prompt to choose which account to use. Those account types are separate and cannot be merged.
