I have a new laptop and I’m trying to run Windows Update, but it keeps getting stuck. Could you please help me figure out how to fix it?

    Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    Looking at the screenshot, those failed items are hardware drivers and Lenovo system firmware updates. Perhaps they are failing because Windows Update put them on hold while another installation is processing in the background.

    Please check a few details:

    1. Scroll up or down on that screen to see if a Windows Cumulative Update is listed with a specific error code. If so, what is that code?
    2. Is the laptop plugged into the charger right now? Lenovo firmware updates require the laptop to be connected to wall power to install.

    Also, try this quick reset:

    • Go to "Settings > Windows Update";
    • Pause updates for 1 week;
    • Wait about 10 seconds, then click "Resume updates".

    This usually clears out stuck background queues.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Restart the PC A restart can clear an update process that is blocking the others.
    2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
      • Find Windows Update
      • Select Run
      • Complete the on-screen steps
    3. Check that the Windows Update service is running
      • Press Win + R
      • Type services.msc and press Enter
      • Find Windows Update
      • Right-click it and select Properties
      • Set Startup type to Automatic
      • If the service is stopped, select Start
      • Select Apply and OK
    4. Check for updates again
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update
      • Select Check for updates
    5. Check internet connection
      • Go to Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi
      • Confirm the device is connected
    6. Check free disk space Windows needs at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS to upgrade. If storage is low, free up space before trying again.
    7. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall This can help if another program is blocking the update process. Re-enable protection after testing. This changes security protection temporarily, so use caution.

    If the update is stuck at the same percentage for a long time, run the troubleshooter again and then use Check for updates once more.

    If the new laptop cannot get past update installation during startup, boot into Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup three times, then go to Advanced options and try System Restore. If that is unavailable, try Startup Repair or Reset this PC with Keep my files. Reset this PC can change installed apps and settings, so use it only if the earlier steps do not work.
