I am getting "validation failed notification" while creating a VM.

I need to create a VM with a student subscription. I have tried different regions; however, it keeps showing a "validation failed" notification.

Hi,

Are you trying to create VM in one of your allowed regions? Azure for Students restricts which regions you can deploy resources to. Typically you are restricted to five different regions, and these vary for each person.

Please navigate to Azure Policy -- Authoring -- Assignments using link below:

https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade/~/Assignments

Click on assignment named Allowed resource deployment regions

Examine Allowed locations Parameter value for list of regions, similar to below (regions in screenshot are different than yours):

The regions shown in your Parameter value are the ones you are allowed to deploy resources to. Please try to create resources in one of these regions and let me know the results.

For an Azure for Students subscription, this usually means an Azure Policy is restricting where the VM can be deployed, and sometimes which VM sizes are allowed.

Try this:

1. In the Azure portal, go to Azure Policy → Authoring → Assignments.
2. Look for an assignment such as Allowed resource deployment regions or Allowed locations.
3. Open that assignment and check the Parameter value for the allowed regions.
4. Create the VM only in one of those listed regions.

If the VM still fails validation after selecting an allowed region:

1. Check whether the VM size is available for the subscription in that region. Some student subscriptions have SKU restrictions, and a VM size can show as NotAvailableForSubscription.
2. Try a different supported region from the policy assignment.
3. Try a different VM size if the selected size is restricted for that subscription.

To get more detail on the failure in the portal:

1. Select the bell icon to open the notifications panel.
2. Open the failed deployment notification and review the error details.
3. If needed, check the Activity logs for the VM creation attempt.

If the error specifically mentions RequestDisallowedByAzure, the cause is the subscription policy restriction, not a general VM creation issue.
