Mismatched copilot subscription

My Microsoft account has an active Microsoft 365 Premium subscription. The Copilot web experience recognises the subscription, but the Copilot app on one device still displays 'Personal'. I've already restarted the device, signed out/in, and reinstalled/repaired the app. Please check whether my licence is correctly attached to my account and whether there is a subscription sync issue

    Hi Matteo Merialdo,

I can see why this looks concerning, especially when the same account is correctly recognized as Microsoft 365 Premium on the web but appears differently in the app on only one device.

One detail worth clarifying is that “Personal” may refer to the personal-account experience in the Copilot app, rather than indicating that your Microsoft 365 Premium subscription has been downgraded to Microsoft 365 Personal. Microsoft 365 Premium is itself an individual subscription associated with a personal Microsoft account.

Could you please confirm whether the app is actually missing any Premium benefits, such as the higher usage allowance, advanced AI features, or Premium agents? It would also help to know:

    • Which operating system and Copilot app version are installed on the affected device?
    • Where exactly does the word “Personal” appear in the app?
    • Is the same Microsoft account listed in the app’s account switcher, with no additional Microsoft, Google, or Apple sign-in selected?

Since you have already restarted, repaired, and reinstalled the app, the next useful check would be to open the Windows Get Help app, search for Copilot License Troubleshooter, and complete the diagnostic. Microsoft provides this troubleshooter specifically for cases where an eligible Copilot entitlement is not being recognized correctly.

You can also review Microsoft’s guidance here:

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum, so contributors cannot inspect or relink an account-level subscription from here. If Premium-only features are genuinely unavailable after the diagnostic, please contact Microsoft Support while signed in with the subscription owner account. When the Support Assistant appears, you can enter: “I need a live support agent.”

When posting back publicly, please cover the email address, order number, subscription ID, or any other billing information shown in screenshots. Thank you so much for your understanding.

A direct account-level license check cannot be performed here.

Supported self-service checks for this scenario:

    1. Confirm the subscription on the Microsoft account
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard and verify that the account shows an active qualifying subscription such as Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium.
      • On Windows 11, select Start and then select the account picture to see which Microsoft 365 subscription is licensed on the device.
    2. Make sure the app is using the same account that owns the subscription
      • In Microsoft 365 apps and Copilot, verify that the signed-in account is the subscription owner account.
      • If needed, select the account icon and sign in with a different account.
      • If Microsoft 365 Premium is shared with the account rather than owned by it, desktop app AI benefits are limited to the subscription owner, while Chat remains available at microsoft365.com.
    3. Refresh the Microsoft 365 app license
      • Open any Microsoft 365 app.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Select Update License.
      • Close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
    4. If the issue is only in the Copilot app and multiple personal accounts are used
      • Start a new private browsing session.
      • Go to copilot.microsoft.com.
      • Sign in with the personal account to verify whether that account has moved to the updated Copilot experience.
      • Different personal accounts can move to the updated Copilot app at different times.
    5. Report the problem from the Copilot app if the mismatch continues
      • Select the ellipsis (…) in the upper-right corner.
      • Select Send feedback > Report a problem.
      • Include when the issue started, device and operating system details, and a screenshot.

What is supported by the documentation for the mismatch described:

    • Qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions determine Copilot in Microsoft 365 access.
    • Only the subscription owner can use Copilot in the desktop apps for Personal, Family, or Premium subscriptions.
    • License validation issues can occur when signed in with the wrong account.
    • Different personal accounts may transition to the updated Copilot app at different times.
