Authenticator App Loop

I am trying to log in to an account I have not accessed for some time. It asks me to provide a code from my Authenticator app. When I go to that app, it asks me to sign in and takes me to the same screen, but fails to provide me a code.

This is usually an Authenticator sign-in loop: the account is asking for a code from the same Authenticator registration that is no longer accessible.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. On the sign-in page, look for Sign in another way, Other verification options, or I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now.
      • If another registered method is available, use it, such as SMS, phone call, security key, or another authenticator device.
    2. If the account is a work or school account and no other method is available, contact the organization’s IT help desk and ask them to reset the MFA registration or require MFA re-registration for the account.
      • This is the documented path when the Authenticator registration is no longer accessible.
    3. After the reset, start sign-in again and complete the new security setup.
      • Add the account back to Microsoft Authenticator and complete the test notification or code request.
    4. If Authenticator opens but authentication still does not complete, check these common causes:
      • Make sure the app is unlocked.
      • Make sure notifications are enabled.
      • Make sure the app is updated.
      • Make sure the device has internet connectivity.
      • Make sure the device date and time are correct.
    5. If the sign-in page offers a code from Outlook mobile instead, open Outlook mobile and go to:
      • General > Accounts > select the account > Sign-in requests
      • Copy the code shown there and paste it into the sign-in page.
      • Codes refresh every 30 seconds.
    6. If the issue continues, in Authenticator open the top-level menu and select Send feedback to send logs.
      • For a work or school account, then reach out to the IT admin.
      • For a personal account, then contact Support.

Do not remove or reinstall Authenticator while locked out, because that does not reset the stored MFA registration for a work or school account.
