Update Office for Mac first because Microsoft currently documents a reduced-functionality issue that prevents editing, creating, and saving files, matching the behavior you described.^1^
1. Update Office and activate with the purchasing account
- Close all Office applications except Excel.
- In Excel, select Help → Check for Updates.
- Install every available update, then restart the Mac.
- Open Excel and sign in using the Microsoft account associated with the purchase.
- Test File → Save As and creating a blank workbook.
The documented current issue affects Microsoft 365 subscribers and some non-subscription Office installations on macOS. It can place Office into “reduced functionality mode,” where files open but cannot be edited, saved, or created.^1^
2. Verify that the account actually contains your license
If error 0x8000FFFF remains:
- Visit Microsoft account Services and sign in.
- Select Install Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Confirm that the purchased Microsoft 365 subscription or one-time Office product appears.
- In Excel, sign out, close Excel, reopen it, and sign in with that exact account.
Access to free Office web applications alone does not establish that the account contains a desktop Office license.^2^
3. Reset the Mac’s Office licensing data
If the license is listed but activation still fails, remove the local licensing files and reactivate. This removes all Office licenses stored on the Mac, so have the correct account password available first.
- Quit Excel and every other Office application.
- Download Microsoft’s license removal tool.
- Open the downloaded
.pkg file.
- If macOS reports an unidentified developer, Control-click → Open.
- Select Continue, follow the prompts, and choose Install. Enter the Mac administrator password if requested.
- When removal completes, open Excel and sign in with the account containing your license.
- If offered multiple licenses, select the license you currently own.
- After activation succeeds, restart the Mac and test Save As again.^3^
If you purchased Office once rather than subscribing
Check where Excel was installed:
- Microsoft 365 subscription: the Mac App Store version can be activated with the subscription.
- One-time Office purchase: Office apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are not compatible with perpetual licenses and remain in reduced-functionality mode.^4^
For a one-time license installed from the Mac App Store:
- Close Office.
- Open Finder → Applications.
- Control-click Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, then select Move to Trash.
- Sign in to Microsoft account Services.
- Locate the purchased Office product, select Install, and run the Microsoft-provided installer.
- Open Excel and activate it with the same purchasing account.
If the license is absent from the Services page, locate the purchase confirmation to identify the account used. If the license is present but all the steps above fail, use Contact Us on the Microsoft Support page and provide the error code, macOS version, Excel version from Excel → About Microsoft Excel, and whether the license is Microsoft 365 or a one-time purchase.
