Hi, I am currently locked out of my PC by a BitLocker recovery prompt. My Microsoft account is placed under a 30-day security hold because I requested an update to my security info. Because of this hold, I cannot view my BitLocker recovery key at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey. I urgently need assistance to verify my identity so I can retrieve my recovery key and access my computer.

As much as anyone wants to help you, this is unfortunately not possible.

This 30-day delay is intentional. It’s a security safeguard designed to protect users in case someone else tries to hijack their account by changing recovery info. The wait gives the rightful owner time to notice and stop unauthorized changes.

Unfortunately, this policy cannot be bypassed. Microsoft explains it further here.

If you must use the computer now, the only way is to clean install, start over with a different account or local account for now, then wait 30 days to link your Msft account back. Doing so does remove all of your files unless they have been backed up somewhere.

There is no bypass for the 30-day security hold to access the BitLocker recovery key through the Microsoft account. The supported path is:

    1. Check whether the recovery key was saved somewhere else when BitLocker was turned on:
      • a printed copy
      • a USB flash drive
      • another Microsoft account, if the device was set up by someone else
      • a work or school account, if the device was ever signed into an organization account
    2. If it might be in a work or school account, on another device sign in to the My Account portal, open Devices, select the locked device, and choose View BitLocker Keys or View Keys.
    3. If access to the Microsoft account itself is the blocker, use the Microsoft account recovery form. That is the supported way to recover access to the account.
    4. If the recovery key cannot be found, and the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone, the remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options.

Resetting the device removes all files.

Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.
