My Surface Pro 9 won't start up anymore. The logo appears and flashes, then nothing happens. This happened overnight from Saturday to Sunday during the time change in France.

    Hi luciana giani,

I understand how concerning it is when your Surface suddenly stops starting and only shows a flashing logo.

The timing may have coincided with the clock change in France, but a time-zone adjustment would not normally prevent a Surface from completing its startup. The more important detail is whether the device can still reach the Surface UEFI or boot from recovery media.

Before arranging service, could you please confirm the following?

    • When you hold the power button for approximately 20 seconds, does the logo appear again before you release the button?
    • Can you open Surface UEFI by holding Volume Up while pressing and releasing Power?
    • Is the light on the Surface Connect charger steady, flashing, or off?
    • Have you already tried starting the device from an official Surface USB recovery drive?

Please note that using a recovery drive to reset the Surface can remove personal files, apps, and settings, so this should only be used after reviewing the recovery information carefully.

If the Surface cannot enter UEFI or start from an official recovery drive, the device may require inspection through an available Surface service option.

Thank you so much for your understanding.

The time change in France is not identified as a cause in the available Surface guidance. For a Surface Pro 9 that shows the logo, flashes, and then does not continue, use these steps in order:

    1. Disconnect everything connected to the Surface.
      • Remove USB drives, SD cards, USB accessories, external monitors, the Type Cover, and disconnect from any Surface Dock.
      • Try turning it on again.
    2. Charge it with the power supply designed for the Surface.
      • Leave it charging for at least 15 minutes.
      • Then close and reopen the lid or keyboard and press the power button.
    3. Try the display wake shortcut.
      • Connect a keyboard or use the integrated keyboard.
      • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
    4. Force a shutdown and restart.
      • Press and hold the power button until the logo screen appears again, about 20 seconds.
      • If the device reaches Windows after this, install the latest Surface and Windows updates.
    5. If it is still stuck on the logo screen, use a USB recovery drive.
      • Shut down the Surface.
      • Insert the USB recovery drive.
      • Press and hold Volume Down, then press and release Power.
      • When the Surface logo appears, release Volume Down.
    6. If it still cannot boot, and especially if it also cannot boot from USB or open UEFI, the accepted Microsoft Q&A guidance indicates this is likely a motherboard or firmware failure and there is nothing more to fix at home. At that point, use a service option such as self-repair, sending it to Microsoft, or in-person support.
