Confirm that Word is signed in with the same Microsoft account that owns the active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, then refresh its license.
1. Verify the subscription and account
- Close all Microsoft 365 apps.
- Open Services & subscriptions and sign in with the account used to purchase Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Confirm that:
- Microsoft 365 Personal is listed.
- Its status is Active.
- The renewal or expiration date reflects the payment.
- There is no Past due, Pay now, or payment alert.
Microsoft identifies this as the first check for subscription warnings in Word.^1^
If the subscription is missing, try any other personal Microsoft account that may have been used for the purchase. An account not associated with the subscription cannot activate Word.^2^
2. Refresh Word’s license
If the subscription is active:
- Open Word.
- Select File → Account.
- Compare the signed-in account with the account showing the active subscription.
- If they differ, sign out of every account displayed in Word.
- Close Word and the other Microsoft 365 apps completely.
- Restart Windows using Start → Power → Restart.
- Reopen Word and sign in with the account owning Microsoft 365 Personal.
- If Update License or Reactivate appears under File → Account, select it.
This refreshes the local subscription information that Word is using.^3^
3. If Word still displays the billing notice
Run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Microsoft’s Account Notice support page:
- Start the troubleshooter on the affected PC.
- Allow the page to open the Windows Get Help app.
- Complete its activation prompts.
- Reopen Word and check File → Account.
The troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and must run on the PC where Microsoft 365 is installed.^1^
If activation still fails, check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for multiple Office installations. Multiple copies can create activation conflicts; remove only the version you are not using, restart Windows, and test Word again.^2^
4. Escalate a confirmed billing/account mismatch
If Services & subscriptions shows Microsoft 365 Personal as active and paid, but Word still reports a billing problem after troubleshooting, contact Microsoft Support. Enter Microsoft 365 billing/activation, select Get Help, and then choose Contact Support to obtain the available support options.^4^
If Microsoft 365 was purchased through Apple, Google, Amazon, or another retailer, billing is managed by that provider rather than Microsoft; the Services & subscriptions page can indicate this through missing or limited management options.[^5^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Where can I manage my Microsoft 365 subscription? | Microsoft Support")
