If the issue does not occur when you open Excel in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window, it is very likely that the issue is related to browser extensions that are currently installed. You can try disabling the extensions and check whether the issue still occurs.

At the same time, you can try clearing your browser cache by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Delete, then selecting Clear now.

If the issue persists, you can create a new browser profile, use that profile to open Excel, and check whether the interface still automatically switches to a black background.

Based on the information I have found, at this time, there is no setting available to switch Excel for the web to Dark Mode.

Could you please share a screenshot showing the black background you are experiencing?

In the meantime, please try opening the Excel file in an Incognito/InPrivate browser window (Ctrl + Shift + N) to check whether the black background still appears. This can help determine whether the issue may be related to a browser extension.

Additionally, please check the Contrast Themes settings in Windows and verify whether Color Filters are enabled on your Windows device.

If the Excel sheet background is black, switch Excel out of Dark Mode:

1. Open the workbook in Excel.
2. Go to View.
3. Select Switch Modes.

For Dark Mode to be available, the Office theme must be set to Black or Use system setting under File > Account > Office Theme.

If the black background is caused by cell fill color instead of Dark Mode:

1. Select the cells.
2. Go to Home > Fill Color.
3. Choose a different color, or select No Fill to remove it.

If colors are not displaying correctly, high contrast mode can also affect worksheet colors.
