I have a free azure account, can I run vscode /azure? If so, how do I set up my account to do this?

Yes, VSCode is free and can be installed/used regardless of your Azure account.

To access Azure from VSCode, install the Azure Resources extension from the Extensions Marketplace inside of VSCode. Once installed, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with Azure. You should then be able to view and manage your Azure resources from VSCode.

Hello @Michael Wassermann and thank you for your question.

If by "VS Code /Azure" you mean the browser-based /azure environment at https://vscode.dev/azure, you can set it up as follows:

    1. Open the site. Select Allow if prompted to let "VS Code for the Web - Azure" sign you in.
    2. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Azure account.
    3. If prompted, select the appropriate tenant.
    4. Select the Azure subscription you want to use.
    5. The /azure environment should then initialize and connect to Azure.

    A couple of quick notes:

    • Tenant: If more than one is listed, choose the organization/tenant containing the Azure subscription you intend to use.
    • Subscription: This determines where the Azure resources you access or create belong. If your free Azure account has only one applicable subscription, select that one. If you have several, choose the one containing the resources you want to use or where you intend to create them.

For more information, see VS Code for the Web - Azure.

If you instead mean to ask about using Azure from the desktop version of VS Code, then you can install the Azure Tools extension pack and sign in with your Azure account from VS Code.

If you found my response helpful or informative, I would greatly appreciate it if you could follow this guide for your confirmation. Thank you.
