Question

I have SSMS installed 18.10 version and I am trying to edit a job step in Azure Managed Instance, that is always causing error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object. (SqlManagerUI)"

I have found a solution to this, first uninstall SSMS then download SSMS v18.9.2 from here
I think this is an issue with SSMS v.18.10, so I removed it and downgraded to the lower version and now I'm able to edit job steps.

I have the same issue and am using 18.11 - I am not managed instance - just regular on-premise SQL Server.
Editing any job step crashes on the laptop client. While remoted to server via RDP running SSMS - no issues.

Sure - I'll get a dump file. We were wondering if it was Cylance.... after an update of SSMS on SQL Server and reboot it kind of works now on server via RDP via SSMS. Still crashing on SSMS on laptop remotely connected to DB.

Hi @Shervey, Jeff - thanks for the additional information. I am still trying to replicate the issue here, can you provide a few more details about your configuration please?

You mentioned that after an update of SSMS and reboot it "kind of works". Can you elaborate on what "kind of works" means? Also, what was the update of SSMS? Please confirm what build you are running, and the version of SQL Server to which you are connecting.

What type of Agent job is this? Would you be able to provide the (scrubbed) T-SQL for me to try and recreate the issue? Is this an SSIS job step?

Also, can you provide the exact steps (e.g. right-click on job and select Properties, select Steps, click on the step and select Edit...etc.) so I know I am following the same process?

Can you confirm this happens for every job and/or job step? Or just certain ones?

Finally, can you please share screen resolution and whether you're using 1K, 4K, etc.?

Ok I have both my laptop client SSMS and SSMS on server in question both at 18.11.1.
The SQL Server 2017 server is on CU18 standard edition. All freshly booted after getting SSMS updated.

When trying my laptop client SSMS to edit a job step - it hangs for like 4 seconds and then crashes SSMS. SSMS automatically restarts. The SQL Agent job step is a simple T-SQL step that call a proc "EXEC SPROC_DanBIDB_ETL".

I can edit the job step while using SSMS RDP'ed on the server.

However it seems once SSMS crashes on laptop client while editing job step on Server. Then it causes the server SSMS to get pissed and then I can no longer edit a job step while RDP'ed on server running SSMS. SSMS then also crashes on server. Server OS is: Windows Server 2016 standard.

My laptop client resolution is 4K - but server RDP resolution is 2560x1440.
