Azure AD B2C with free subscription actual cost

I'm confused of the Azure AD B2C free coverage, and the actual cost of the billing.

Here is my situation.

  1. Few days ago, I setup an Azure account with free subscription. Got 200$ credit for one month, of course.
  2. I created a new Azure AD B2C tenant, following this url:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory-b2c/tutorial-create-tenant
  3. So now I have two different directory. One for the free subscription, and one for the AD B2C tenant.
  4. Using the AD B2C user flow, I registered a test user with email & password.
  5. That means, I have 1 MAU for now. Right?
  6. On the AD B2C docs, it says first 50,000 MAU will be covered as a free tier.
  7. I checked cost analysis on the free subscription, then I noticed that Azure charged me the 1 MAU for using AD B2C. Here is the screenshot.

And here is my question.

Is the actual cost shown on the cost analysis just an illusion and it's actually calculated as free?

Or did I totally misunderstand the concept of "free tier" of AD B2C?

I'm just worried that if I change my subscription to pay-as-you-go, and then suddenly AD B2C charges me for every MAU, even though it's under 50,000

Hi @cocoforuiuc • Thank you for reaching out.

Your understanding is correct, as the first 50,000 MAU are covered as a free tier and any amount for the first 50,000 MAUs should NOT be deducted from your subscription.

Based on the screenshot that you have shared, I can see consumption of ₩3.66, which is less than the actual MAU cost i.e., ₩3.855963. I suspect, this consumption is by some other Azure Resource and not based on MAU. To confirm the same, you can create a couple of test users, sign in via user flow and check if more amount from your subscription is consumed or not. However, if you see an increase in consumption afterward please open a free support ticket to get it addressed.
