I have a brand new HP computer with 1 GIG SSD drive running windows 11 and keep getting the error below on install. I have googled and tried several solutions and nothing has worked. Here is what I have also found but none of this My observations so far after reading many threads: In the above environment, SQL Server 2019 will install properly on a second hard drive If the Primary Hard Drive is less than 1TB, then also there is no problem (SQL Server 2019 installs properly) but this options is also not available to me If you partition the 1TB SSD, the problem persists because the partition is still recognised internally as “One Single Hard Drive” The issue is that Windows 11 is verifying the sector size is not over 4K and SQL Server installation fails when the hard drive sector is larger then 4096 Can anyone help get this installed. Please check the MS document that Erland mentioned, this is a known issue for SQL server 2019, MS has shared the solutions.

If the situations and solutions from this MS document could not help you. Please read your SQL server setup log and SQL server error log, then share us the logs or related error message for analysis.

You may or may not be facing the same issue. The error message you get tells you that SQL Server did not start when Setup wanted to run installation scripts. this may be due to the issue mentioned in my answer below, but it can also be something else.

Please don't piggyback on threads, but start a new thread. Be sure to attach C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQl15.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG.

I guess we defined "acted" in different ways. My interpretation of "acted" means Microsoft do one or both of these:

Fix the SQL 2019 Dev Edition installer

Fix Windows 11

Requiring someone who encounters this error to spend 1.5 days trying to find a "work around" isn't what I would consider "acted on this". Having a user enter registry values is not "acting on this".

As a Software Engineer, if I tried to suggest my end users to perform these tasks, I would be unemployed. We shouldn't and can't allow such low expectations from a company like Microsoft, they need to be held to a higher standard.

I can't speak for the Windows team, but I guess they found good reasons to report the actual disk sector.

I can agree that updating the installer would be beneficial for users. But I can also see that the installer is kind of carved in stone. Making updates for an installer of a released version is likely to be quite a risky endeavour. The last thing they want is the installer starting to fail for everyone. Keep in mind that when the installer was produced, Windows 11 did not exist.

Hopefully, the installer for SQL 2022 (or SQL 2022 itself) will understand how to deal with Windows 11.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Microsoft own and support both products ... the risky endeavour is failing to support their latest and greatest OS (Windows 11). They have a "Safeguard" system in place (in Windows 10) that should have prevented the Windows 11 install since Microsoft clearly knew there was a problem since they have it documented.

My use case was pretty basic, something that should have been caught with rudimentary testing.

I like to clarify that I don't disagree with you entirely. It's not a good customer experience, and the final outcome puts Microsoft in bad light. However, while it is one Microsoft, behind the scene there are two teams.

As for the rudimentary testing, as I understand it, in practice, the issue only applies to one specific SSD brand, albeit a popular one.

Yeah, I can agree that Windows 11 should have an upgrade blocker, or at least an advisor saying that you will have problems with SQL Server if you upgrade.

Myself, I only had my first quick encounter with Windows 11 on a temporary Azure VM the other day. The machine I'm typing this on, is too old to qualify for Windows 11.

Windows 10 does have an upgrade blocker to Windows 11 ... it's called Safeguard Hold.

On the hardware front, you'll need the latest TPM 2.0 chip (actual chip not just firmware) for Win11 to install. Ironically my AMD 5950X CPU recently required an UEFI update because the TPM module was causing delayed processing which often resulted in rapid stuttering for 1-2 seconds. Windows 11 is certainly more secure hence my adoption as soon as it was available. Win11 performance is however lower than Win10 ... not by much, but Win11 is slower.

I'm having the same issue, but none of these suggestions have worked. And the drive already shows 4096. I even put the registry entry with the *4096, to no avail.
