MECM Console won't open for some users

Question

Hello,

I have recently upgraded our infrastructure to Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2019. We have 1 primary site server and the SQL database is on its own server. I am running MECM 2010.

Administrative level users are able to open the console successfully. It is only users in a particular group that can't open it. They get the message below:

I have created a fresh test user and assigned it Full Administrator security role, that account gets the same error message.

I have looked at the SMSProv.log and the SMSAdminUI.log. There is nothing obvious in the SMSProv.log the SMSAdminUI.log has the following:

There are two users above ktadmin2 can login successfully, they have the Full Admin role assigned. The other user lmadmin is a member an AD group that via Security Roles in MECM only has access to manage computers and collections.

I have searched various forums but can't find an answer. Hopefully someone here will be able too.

Problem/Symptom:
Users in a particular group that can't open MECM Console with permission error.

Solution/Workaround:
Add the users as Admins to the site server and that resolves the issue.

Could you clarify som details in this question.
How are you connecting to the CM console? How does the users, that has problem, connect to the console?
Do you connect through a single server, the site server itself, jumpstart server or on workstations?

Hi Otto,

The users that are having problems are trying to connect from their workstations. I will ask one of them to try to connect using the console directly on the site server. I am able (as are other Full Administrators) to connect from a workstation or run the console directly from the site server.

I have now tested asking a user with the issue to run the console from the site server, they get the same error. However, if I add them to the Administrators group on that server they are able to open the console successfully, once I remove them the error returns. So it does look like a permission issue. Do you have any idea where it would be?

Please add full control permission of the Logs folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Logs) to the user to have a try. Similar thread for your reference:
