"User is authenticated but not connected" when trying to use ThunderBird as mail client access office365

"User is authenticated but not connected" when trying to use ThunderBird as mail client access office365 after confirmed below:
1. Ensure that the user name and password are correct and that the same user name and password run properly on the OUTLOOK client
2. The message can already be Sent and received by the peer end, but the sending will stop forever at 100% copying the message to the Sent folder, and the sent message is synced in Sent mail box in Outlook client.

Hi @YuWenshan-Nokia

Are you using the default autodiscover feature in Outlook to connect to Office 365?
If yes, would it work if you configure SMTP and IMAP with the same settings as thunderbrid in Outlook?

Hi, KaelYao
thank you for checking this topic
when I use OUTLOOK, it just asked me my mail address then server was configured automatically, and it was done successfully (I did not set server address nor port);
but for Thunderbird client, I got same error message by either automatically configuration and manually doing.

please, as first step, have a check on my configuration (done by manually) pasted in question. Is correct or not?

Hi,
Thanks for the update!

when I use OUTLOOK, it just asked me my mail address then server was configured automatically, and it was done successfully (I did not set server address nor port)

Outlook should be using the autodiscover feature and the protocol is MAPI.

please, as first step, have a check on my configuration (done by manually) pasted in question. Is correct or not?

In the screenshot you are using OAuth2 as the authentication method.
Have you configured it on the Office 365 side?
Reference: Authenticate an IMAP, POP or SMTP connection using OAuth

If not, would you like to use basic authentication (username and password) to access the mailbox in ThunderBird?

Hi,
Please kindly note that:
Since thunderbrid is a third-party email client, which we are not very familiar with, I would recommend also posting in thunderbrid support forum if you are having trouble with configuring accounts on thunrderbrid.
(Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)
Thanks for your understanding.

Here are the steps I configure my test account in thunderbrid(same version 91.8.1(64-bit)):
1.In my test the General.UserAgent.CompatMode.Firefox isn't necessary so I skipped this step

2.select ...>New>Existing Mail Account
196770-62.png

3.enter the name and email address(Office 365),leave the password as blank
196805-63.png

4.thunderbird auto-detected the settings of Office 365 server
196789-64.png
It it didn't, you may also configure it manually:
196806-65.png

5.After the account is configured, you would be prompted for password, select Cancel:
196861-66.png

6.click Account settings
196790-67.png
locate Server Settings, change Authentication Method to OAuth2
196871-68.png
In advanced, uncheck the field of show only subscribed folders
196778-73.png

locate Outgoing Server(SMTP), also change the Authentication Method to OAuth2
196834-69.png

7.back to the main page, click Get messages
196862-70.png
You would see a Microsoft login pop-up
196808-71.png
enter the password of your account, if your account have MFA enabled, step forward to authenticate.
Once you authenticate successfully, you would see this page:
196882-72.png
click accept.

8.test send and receive

Application ID
Thunderbird 08162f7c-0fd2-4200-a84a-f25a4db0b584

then the link is https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant ID>/oauth2/authorize?client_id=08162f7c-0fd2-4200-a84a-f25a4db0b584&response_type=code&prompt=admin_consent

Hi,
Yes. You may need to access the url with an administrator account.

Hi, @KaelYao-MSFT

confused, do you mean the administrator account has to do it one by one for everyone who wants to use Thunderbird?
asked as some colleagues have been using Thunderbird for a while, and I guess not possible to ask administrator account to do it one by one for a company with tens of thousands of people
any misunderstanding?

No. It isn't necessary.
If you configure your mailbox in thunderbrid, after you authenticate would you be prompted like:

Can you get the existing emails in thunderbrid and send emails successfully?
If not, please trying removing the existing account and re-adding the account, follow the steps in the link (leave password as blank): Configuring Exchange Online with IMAP & OAuth2

sound endless loop, I can go nowhere?

I can send mail from Thunderbird and synchronized to Out box in Outlook, but with endless as first screen snap topside;

after removed account in Thunderbird and follow the steps in the link (leave password as blank): Configuring Exchange Online with IMAP & OAuth2, the link goes to "Need admin approval"
uninstalled thunderbird then run the link gets same error message, after reinstalled thunderbird, the result is same.

maybe, we can have an online session when you have time, to avoid any misunderstanding?

Hi,
Sorry for the confusion caused.

It is not necessary to access this url: https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant ID>/oauth2/authorize?client_id=08162f7c-0fd2-4200-a84a-f25a4db0b584&response_type=code&prompt=admin_consent.

This url is used for administrator to add the application to the tenant and manage conditional access for specific users.
It is not for end users.

For end users, if your administrator doesn't restrict user consent to applications,
196468-61.png

please follow the steps started from this part:

Now as an end user, start Thunderbird. Do not start configuring the account yet, as we first need to modify a Thunderbird setting to allow for successful Modern Authentication through a browser popup.

Would you see some password cache in Preferences>Saved Passwords?
If you remove the password cache in thunderbrid, would it help?

Hi, KaelYao
thank you for checking it continually, but looks result is still not expected, sorry
shortly, password and MFA code were asked after removed saved password but finally the same message backs.

after the “Preferences” → “Preferences” menu, go to the “Security” → “Passwords” tab, click the “Saved Passwords...” button and remove the entry(s) that have the old password.![197993-2022-05-01-09-08-17-preferences-mozilla-thunderbir.png][1]
password is asked:![197994-2022-05-01-09-10-57-wenshan-mozilla-thunderbird.png][2]
MFA code is asked:![197995-2022-05-01-09-11-29-wenshan-mozilla-thunderbird.png][3]
Message "Improve your sign-ins" popped:![197934-2022-05-01-09-11-40-wenshan-mozilla-thunderbird.png][4]
if choose "Not now", old friend came back :![197920-2022-05-01-09-12-41.png][5]
if choose "Next", it guides me to install Authenticator on my mobile which I have, I did not go that direction finally. ![197965-2022-05-01-10-12-19-user-is-authenticated-but-not.png][6]
as for tried changing the "maximum number of connections to cache" to 1 by Edit->Account Settings->Server Settings->Advanced... , did not see "Advanced" under "Server setting" somehow: (Accounting setting is under "Tools" instead of "Edit") ![197974-2022-05-01-10-15-35-account-settings-mozilla-thund.png][7]
