Error message opening Word file from a particular organisation

I have a client from whom I am unable to open any of their word docs from anyone in their office. I get an error that says "Word experienced an error. Try these suggestions" etc. I am working on a Surface Pro with Windows 10 and updated Office suite software.

I have tried all the workarounds I can find suggested here ie: I have changed the name (it is not too long). I have more than enough room on my hard drive. I have tried "open and repair". I am updated. No dice.

It opens on my iphone as a preview, and it opens in the Pages app on my iphone. Other folks in my office with the same laptop configuration can open it, AND if I forward it to myself (no changes, just a forward), then it opens. Maybe it's an outlook issue?

Any thoughts?

    It sounds like it's time for an Office repair:

    1. Close all Office programs.
    2. Click on the Start button, then on Settings, then on Apps.
    3. Choose Microsoft Office, then click on Change.
    4. Choose Online Repair, then click on the Repair button.
    5. Allow the process to complete, restart your computer, then try opening one of those client files.
